Amazing Miracle, Thank you Dr Slamon!

Reading this book, and yes I saw the movie...again pointed out, How Very BLESSED I am to be alive! If Dr Slamon had given up on his fight to bring Herceptin to fruition...I and a very large number of women would have been dead years ago! I was able to really experience all the problems and difficulties he and many others faced. Reading about those who fought hard for its inception increases my respect and admiration. If not for those who worked so diligently to bring these developments to life many would be dead. In 1999 I was diagnosed with this aggressive form of Cancer. I truly appreciate all those women who went before me. After 8 years on Herceptin, with an OK from Dr Slamon, My weekly Herceptin was discontinued. I have been Blessed now with 16 years of life, when I had originally been given a few months.

Good, but dated.

Very interesting to read since I am now using this miracle drug for a recent diagnosis. I was surprised to see it was published so long ago (1998) and I'd love it to be updated. The personal stories of the women who fought for this drug, and those who didn't get to benefit from it, are the most compelling. I am so grateful to benefit from all the pioneering work that's been done. So why does this still cost $10,000.00 for each infusion 16 years later? I'm getting it for a year, maybe $180,000.00, nearly all covered by insurance. An update on the costs of developing, marketing, and distributing the drug would be helpful.

It told me all about the treatment and the hopes of it helping other women like me, looking for for a cure. I have had both the old way of chemo and am now on this Herceptin. A great difference. So far I am showing improvement. I hope it continues. It is such a gentle way of treatment as compared to the old way, where you feel like you are going to die. The old way, burn, slice and poison is such a cruel way to treat a patient, I truly hope this new method continues to help women with the old problem, breast cancer.

Good depending on your background and goals

The book is solidly written; however, I do feel there is a slight misrepresentation when the book states it is good for beginning photogrammetry. If you are familiar with photogrammetry, the book is a useful reference and provides details on a variety of relevant topics. However, individuals with no knowledge of the topic will find many of the topics unclear,with the authors presuming the reader knows information not presented in the book. There are a large quanitity of formulas presented; however, there are errors in some of the formulas and often, the formulas are not completely explained. If you are not familiar with upper level math concepts like linear algebra, trig and calculus,following how the solutions were derived may be frustrating.
If this is a field you are interested in pursueing, the book may be worth getting. If you are more interested in an overview of photogrammetry, this is probably not the best fit.

Reading Philosophy will appeal to both those beginning their study of philosophy at a university and those who want to engage with the subject on their own. Unlike introductory books which tell the reader about the subject, this one requires the reader to do philosophy. Its direct approach makes the book valuable both for students and for other readers. It can be used as the set reading in seminars in introductory courses: each chapter can act as a focal point for extended discussion week by week. But it is also well adapted for self-sufficient use by individuals working without a teacher.

The volume provides eighteen examples of high-quality philosophical texts, covering nine philosophical topics: Doubt; Self; Tragedy; Equality; Dilemma; Identity; Freedom; Causality; Qualities. The texts include writings by Descartes, Boyle, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Schopenhauer and J. S. Mill, as well as eight written by philosophers in the late twentieth century. Each chapter contains an introduction to the problem, introductions to the texts and their authors, and interactive commentaries on the texts.

About the Author
Samuel Guttenplan is a Reader in Philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is the author of The Languages of Logic (2nd edn, Blackwell, 1997), editor of A Companion to the Philosophy of Mind (Blackwell, 1994) and executive editor of the journal Mind & Language.

Jennifer Hornsby taught philosophy at Oxford from 1978 to 1994, when she moved to Birkbeck College, as Professor. Her chief areas of publication are the philosophy of mind, action and language. She has also written about the impact of feminism on philosophy.

Christopher Janaway was educated at Oxford and has taught for the past twenty years at Birkbeck College, where he is currently Professor of Philosophy. His chief areas of publication are aesthetics, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche.

A fine introduction to philosophical argument

This well-considered collection of primary texts and analytical commentaries manages to introduce some of the fundamental themes of philosophical inquiry (identity, quality, freedom, causality) without shortchanging the real work of abstract thinking that leads to genuine philosophical insight. Unfortunately, many introductory works merely summarize the views of major thinkers. The strength of this collection is that the arguments that make those views important and worthwhile are foregrounded and treated in comprehensive detail. While the included texts (by Descartes, Berkeley, Hume, Schopenhauer, as well as Bernard Williams, Robert Nozick and P.F. Strawson, among several others) can be quite dry, only a reader whose interest in philosophy remains merely superficial could possibly fail to find worlds of fascination and grounds for further reflection in and among these works. The editorial commentaries following each primary text are admirably concise and clear. An excellent main text for introductory courses in philosophy.

A must for skills in reading

This book is a great start for people seeking not only some illumination on basic philosophic texts but more importantly, how to read those texts.

The book is made up primary source texts from historically relevant philosophers. At the end of each reading, there is an "interactive commentary' which points the reader back into key parts of the text, and prompts closer analysis through questions aimed at getting the reader to think. This method is highly instructive because, while anyone choosing this book clearly knows how to read passively, not everyone can trace arguments, pause for questions and examples the way a philosopher does.

The best use for this book is to get a grounding in active reading, this skill is useful for anyone who is required to read in daily or academic life. I didn't realize how passive a reader I was until I encountered this text. The other texts in this series build on these skills so it is wise start with this title. After reading this, a reader can expect to more confidently engage in any complex text which is the true benefit.

If one is looking for a primer on philosophy per se, I would probably recommend one of the books by Nigel Warburton; as those are more straight to the point and closer aligned as primers. This book would likely be too complex for someone seeking a simple primer since it uses primary texts which are by nature more complex than summaries.

Turgid and pedantic

This book is the type that sends people to sleep.

The information is presented in such a way that it feels excruciating to read it.

I have taken several philosophy courses and am reading Baudrillard's "Simulacra and Simulation" right now so am not intimidated by complex texts. I have been interested in philosophy since high school.

Although this book offers itself as a 'beginner book' it is not inviting and doesn't perform the essential task of a beginner book, to inspire further inquiry.Listed in the introduction of what this book has to offer :

"1. Each text presents a clear, well-argued answer to a central philosophical question."

Where is the prompt to act? The question and the answer are already worked out for anyone that cares to read through the less than exciting phrasing. If one has a good memory, the text could be memorized and one could claim to know something about philosophy.

A Godsend When You Need It!

I work deep in immigration law, and frankly, I almost never use this thing. In fact, I bought this when I couldn't find my 2011 Field Guide, which was probably buried under a bunch of other junk I can't find. If I used it every day, well, I'd probably have two of them, and I'd know right where they are at all times.

That said, when it comes time to figure out of an alien derived US citizenship through a parent, or some other obscure situation that rarely arises (at least in my specialty), this guide will fill your heart with joy and wonder. Alright, that's a bit much, but you'll be mighty glad you have it. Rather than sifting endlessly through law books old and new, or looking for that homemade chart that you dearly hope is up-to-date, you just whip out this guide, flip through a few pages, and there's your answer in black and white! Yay!

I usually buy an updated one every three or so years, however this time I was holding off as our honest and hard working politicians (cough) were supposedly going to "fix" our "broken" immigration system. Turns out they had better things to do...it is beyond belief they would say such things just to get elected (big cough).

Point is, though I didn't want to spend the money, I did anyway, because I hate being without this handy little book.

Great resource

When they say pocket guide, they mean pocket guide. This is a tiny little reference, but packed with lots of great info. It's an excellent quick resource to have on hand. It's no match for Kurzban's or AILA LINK, but it's great in a pinch or for a starting reference. I'm currently using it to fashion an intro to immigration law course for my new staff attorney and some of our law student interns. The layout of the Field Guide is intuitive and perfect for attorneys new to immigration.

This novel was not what I expected. It was better. I really enjoyed both sides of the novel. It tells both the story of a Jew and his experience with the Angel Raphael BC and a modern woman's life-enhancing trip to Venice. Her self awareness grows with her exposure to life lived with the everydayness of Venetians. Her eye- opening experience with the perfect gentleman and her push towards a life well-lived rather than stepping back into bitterness was more satisfying than I expected. So the book offers surprises, though I've read the BC story before somewhere. Thoroughly enjoyable with a satisfying end.

Life (and Death) in Venice

Middle-aged schoolmistress Julia Garnet, grieving after the death of her long-term friend and flatmate (but not, we infer, her lover), moves to Venice with a six-month rental on a small apartment off the Grand Canal. Miss Garnet is a spinster, a Communist and an atheist. She very quickly falls in love - not once but twice.

Her first love, an art historian, proves to be an unwise choice. Her second love, depicted in painting and sculpture in various churches and galleries, is the Archangel Raphael who famously accompanied the apocryphal prophet Tobias across the land of Assyria to meet the demonically possessed woman he was destined to love.

Salley Vickers alternates the story of Miss Garnet and the people she meets in Venice with a re-telling in vernacular English of Tobias's ancient odyssey. And as the city with its canals casts a spell over Julia's heart, this biblical romance frees her spirit - her soul - from a dormancy that has lasted her entire life.

The writing of this beguiling novel is elegant but unfussy, the kind of writing, you feel, that Jane Austen might be producing if she were alive today. In contrast to Tobias's cinematic adventures, events in modern Venice move at an unhurried pace, but Miss Garnet's 'awakening' makes her an endearing if not entirely lovable heroine. Defying categorization, this is a spiritual quest that spans almost three millennia.

About the Author
Shahab D. Mohaghegh is the president and CEO of Intelligent Solutions, Inc. (ISI) and Professor of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at West Virginia University. A pioneer in the application of Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining in the Exploration and Production industry, he holds B.S., MS, and PhD degrees in petroleum and natural gas engineering. He has authored more than 180 technical papers and carried out more than 50 projects with major international companies. He is a SPE Distinguished Lecturer and has been featured in the Distinguished Author Series of SPE’s Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT) four times. He has been honored by the U.S. Secretary of Energy for his technical contribution in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon (Macondo) incident in the Gulf of Mexico and has served as a member of U.S. Secretary of Energy’s Technical Advisory Committee on Unconventional Resources.

Graduate level poker

When I saw the title of the book, I understood immediately the reason behind it. I noticed that some others on the forums were confused by it or thought it didn’t make much sense. But if you’ve read Mathematics of Poker or similar analyses, you have to have some idea of what position you will end up in when you make earlier decisions. If you don’t, you could end up playing your hand face-up on the River. And since the pot is the largest on the River, you are giving away a huge amount of equity if your opponent knows this. Getting this street right will make it easier for you to plan your hand from the Flop on.

I have played limit hold’em far more than no-limit, so I’m looking for ways to understand the transition, what to think about, what things to think about differently, and so on. This book is a great way for me to put those pieces together and be able to apply those principles on real hands.

One of those important differences is that it’s not just understanding your opponent’s range but how your bet sizing will affect the way your opponent splits his range into fold, call, and raise. In limit, you have one bet size to choose from, and you have far less reason to bet-fold. But here, you have to figure out where you’re getting optimal value by adjusting from min-bet to all-in.

The author points out early on that because there are so many small variables that go into a situation, you can play around with those variables to produce 20 variations on any particular hand example. So, let’s say you have the same betting sequence and board cards, but instead of assuming the opponent is loose-passive, we assume weak-tight. How does that change what range they show up with? How does that change our optimal play? It can be wildly different, from betting large to just checking it down because we have no value bet any longer. Or just change the River card to any of the other 45 possibilities. Or assume the Turn was a bet-call instead of checked through.

As someone who has read a lot of poker books, there’s always a bit of drudgery in the beginning of each one where the author feels obliged to go over the fundamentals again: what is EV, how do you calculate pot odds, what is a semi-bluff, etc. There’s none of that here, and it’s really refreshing. Even some of the more advanced stuff like different range shapes is covered in previous books, and you don’t get wasted pages going over those terms again. If you don’t know those concepts yet, you shouldn’t be starting this book anyway. And I’m glad the author stuck to that position.

The book is organized very logically. The first section is Bet or Check, from both in position and out of position, and the second section is Fold, Call, or Raise, again from both IP and OoP. There are lots of hand examples, quizzes, and so on. The text layout is very easy to read as different sections are highlighted, certain important nuggets are set off in bold, and it is overall visually engaging. I can understand why the large hardcover size was chosen, and it would be a very different reading experience to try to condense it into a paperback format. I usually prefer everything on pdf, but it's like having a poker textbook to study out of, and that makes for a very different reading experience, too. If they taught poker at a graduate level, this is what the textbooks would look like.

There is no index or glossary, but it has a compilation of the various Nuggets throughout the text in the very back, along with page references if you want to go back and re-read that section again. Given the logic of the layout, it shouldn’t be hard to find any particular topic anyway.

You will learn not only "what" to do but more importantly "why" so you can assess your own play. Unlike other poker authors who only back up their statements with their "experience", QTip explains everything with simple, solid math. There are a LOT of calculations and charts in this book, and they lay out information in some ways that are eye-opening to say the least.

The book focuses only on the river, with two huge benefits. Mainly, it makes analysis a lot simpler for teaching purposes; also, since pots and bets are biggest on the river, improving play on this street will directly improve your winrate a fair bit.

Just a warning, this is not a book for people who want quick answers, a system, or secret moves; it's here for those willing to put in work to learn accurate EV-based poker thinking. It's like a college textbook: very densely packed with information, and filled with examples and exercises.

One of the best technically sound authors in the game. This book reads like a college math book that gives you lots of homework to practice on.

The Best Book on Student Leadership on The Market Today

This book is, quite simply, the best book written on student leadership available on the market today -- bar none. Komives connects with today's students in a way that empowers them to make a difference! A must have for every student leader on a college campus and those who seek to learn about, challenge, and support them. If you are teaching a course using this book, don't miss the free instructor's guide available online on the publisher's website -- it is well over 100 pages long and is a spectacular resource. It will save you hundreds of hours of course preparation time and provides deep learning opportunities for your students!

E- books needs reviewing

I am aware of the copy wright issues book producers and sellers are facing pertaining to their books. I am all for securing your interest, however, this book is okay because it is just to read, but the other book I purchased is a work book, so it need to be printable. If these E books are made printable for students, once they enter their student ID or something along that line, it will entice us to purchase them, but as we speak, students are distancing themselves from E books. Other than that I love shopping on Amazon.com

The Optimistic's Guide to a Perfect World

I could not express how much I disliked this book. This book takes an optimistic view on how leadership works in a perfect world. Their suggestions on how it works in a perfect world are spot on. In this perfect world, your superiors support you, work with you, and do not undermine your abilities. In addition, this book is filled with citations and you are rarely reading anything original from the authors' perspectives unless it is a summary.

This book is for an optimistic extremist in you.

The code for "Strength-Finder 2.0" or the MBTI is unnecessary.

The code allows you to take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to which they refer as the "Strength Finder 2.0." They may have changed a few questions, but having taken both tests, they are strikingly similar. This test is unbearably long, repetitive, and tedious.

The MBTI is one of the most common personality tests which tests 16 different personality types based on Carl Jung's theory, and is easily accessible online for free. This specific code allows you to send it to your teacher, and they offer different types of word combinations to "explain" your "special" strengths. If you have the opportunity to compare you results with others, you'll find your results are pre-generated and non-personal or unique to you.
