Must book for the beginners

I have yet to see a beginner's book on C# that even comes close to this one. It is amazing how hundreds of C# books out there misses a critical point that the reader may not understand the material very well unless it is explained in easy detail. This book does not miss its easy details.
I have intermediate skillset in C# and I still found this book helpful because it provides a refreshing perspective on the fundamentals of C# programming. The book does not merely focus on how to program, but on what circumstances one should use certain features. This is something not every C# book will offer.
If you read this book and still can't understand the basic of C#, then programming is not for you.

A true beginners book.

I took a chance on this book because it said that it was a "true beginners book". I had zero computer programming skills or knowledge. I knew some basic PC tasks, like using word, the internet and manipulating some pics I got off my camera, but again zero programming. Everyone I talked to recommened books that were supposed to be for the beginner but everyone of them required at least some elementary background with basic programming terms. I was very frustrated until I found John Smileys book.
His unique classroom style writing approach let me feel apart of his class. What most impressed me was that nothing was taken for granted and nothing was presented or used in the examples without detailed and complete explinations. Most other books I came across program concepts that they dont explain until 3 chapters later.
I was never lost or confused at any stage of my study with this book. Not only was it a complete teaching but the book doesnt requier you to purchase expensive software in order to learn C#. In fact his approach better prepares you to later learn Visual Studio because you now understand how the code is generated and can go in and code on your own if you wanted.
The book built my understanding of C#, my vocabulary for future programming, it gave me confidence that the C# mountain could be conquered, and it left me with the ability to pick up any other C# book and learn.

Great for both novices and midlevel programmers

True to the title, "Learn to Program with C#" clearly introduces the basic principles of computer programming while teaching Microsoft's C# language. This book will be useful to both novice programmers and to programmers, like myself, with some experience in another language. In fact, my earlier experience is in Fortran, Basic and Visual Basic, which I initially learned in a pair of courses taught by the author, John Smiley, several years ago. In reading a review copy of his new book I recalled Smiley's unassuming teaching style that allows each student to build confidence while learning the fundamentals of the language. As a programmer, but without knowledge of any version of "C," I was able to breeze through the introductory chapters, while refreshing my knowledge of concepts such as the "systems development life cycle," which are important to consider before embarking on any programming project. In this book, John Smiley places the reader in a university classroom with himself as the first-person narrator and instructor. Throughout the book, we follow the development of an actual C# application as a "class project" case study. The classroom concept, with named male and female students who ask intelligent questions, is easy to relate to and follow, but is not at all simplistic. This narrative format, unusual for a technical book, works well to lead the reader through the issues that arise during development of a project. Smiley has a very easy-going tone and seemed to anticipate questions that I had regarding the specifics of C#. For me, the most interesting chapters are numbers six through nine in which I learned about methods, instantiable classes, controlling access to object data, and inheritance. I even enjoyed learning about "overloaded constructors," which would have previously seemed to be an arcane concept. All the topics that Smiley undertakes to teach in his book are clearly explained and fully illustrated with "screen shots" and sample code that build pieces of the application that runs through the book. With Learn to Program C#, I think that I learned enough to begin writing C# applications capable of prompting for user input, creating forms with textboxes and buttons, manipulating data, and creating reusable objects.

Got a Shadow ACE VT1100 1999 and this book is worthless. When you try to put so many years in one book, many details that change each year will be left out. I really regret wasting my money in this. Clymer's is better.

Increases knowledge of the hurdles to be surmounted to achieve JUSTICE FOR ALL.

I got this book to read and also purchased the audible version and have discovered it is the missing piece of my own education. I played the audible version several times as it goes rapid pace but was convenient. It is sad to discover that many of Carter Goodwin Woodson's fears have been and continue to be realised in the racial disparity widely noted against the black skin worldwide. Although Mr. Woodson concentrated his criticism on the American social structure of his time, one of his truisms (shortened for this review) plays out daily in today's social responses: “If you can control a man’s thinking, you don’t have to worry about his actions ... and if you can make a man believe that he is justly an outcast, you don’t have to order him to the back door, he will go to the back door on his own and if there is no back door, the very nature of the man will demand that you build one.” Carter G. Woodson was not fully appreciated for his contributions whether some of those were impractical or not and that is not surprising; most brilliant minds are revered posthumously (and perhaps never fully understood). As the son of a slave one must admire Mr. Woodson's capacity to rise above his circumstances as well as his ability to see the issues that plague black people with laser-like accuracy. When reading this book, the reader can only but shake their head in silent acknowledgment of the truths stated therein. Another book that won't find its way into the general / 'public' library of American literature but which should be read by anybody trying to unravel the reasons black progress appears at times to be constantly stymied.

This is not the original publication of this book! It also does not state state which version or publication it is so buyer beware. When compared to the original publication in 1933 its is not in any way similar. I would not recommend it. I would instead recommend going to your local bookstore for a real copy of Woodson work, this is a fabrication.

I wonder..

This book blew my mind. Then it shot it over the stars when I realized it was first published in the early 1930s. REALLY! Indulge in your creative side!

How often have we heard, "Take time to indulge your creativity!" yet we are too busy to do so. Who has the time to slow down and lose yourself in a "project"? Well, this book shows you how. Just one creative step at a time, you rediscover a craft you loved as a child, or you embrace a brand new one. Allison Arden's hands-on workbook is full of specific, easy, doable steps that unlock your creative juices. I, for example, love to bake. I followed the author's grandmother's recipe for old-fashioned apple cake. Delicious! Another of the book's suggestions: read biographies of famous people. I just finished Mary Todd Lincoln's (something I'd been meaning to read for years) and now I'm reading the biography of the Marquis de Lafayette. There are nearly 200 pages of suggested activities --- from throwing a themed party to learning to play chess; from starting a book club to waking early to watch the sunrise; from adopting a holiday you've never celebrated to learning how to pickle something (recipe for pickled string beans included). And, while indulging in our favorite creative activities feels good and creates bliss, there's another HUGE benefit: those "good feelings" that result from doing what we love permeate the rest of our day. The creative juices make all the other parts of our day - work and play - more inspired, joyful, and productive. I appreciated the author's creativity in describing activities we can do alone, with friends, or with family, and I am happy to enthusiastically recommend this book!

Doing is the new Reading

I recently saw Allison Arden speak at a conference and received a copy of her book. I have to say that both the speech and the book have had a huge impact on how I approach life both personally and professionally. Far too often we find ourselves seemingly doing everything while never stopping long enough to really do anything at all. The Book of Doing is the cure for that. It enables you to slow down, look at what is important in life and truly find your passion. In many cases, as with Allison not just find it, but rediscover it! Whether it is discovering the art of the Martini, pickling cucumbers or designing your own insignia, this book is full of small yet profound ideas that get your mind and your body thinking about things in a whole new light. By the way, I suggest the first activity you tackle is designing your own insignia. I did and it has unlocked powerful memories for me and has helped validate my leadership style and my life in general. This is the type of book that makes you a better leader, spouse, parent, friend and person.

I've given The Book of Doing to several people already and just bought 10 more for future gifts for friends, colleagues and perhaps even a few strangers. When I tell them that a book is in the mail for them, they inevitably ask, "What is the book about"? My response is, "It is not a book you read, it is a book you do." I suggest you get one yourself and start doing!

Kudos to Allison for changing her life and so many others.

I recall a friend who bought more than two dozen self-help books in week but complained that not one of them gave her a "how-to", step-by-step action plan to enrich her life. Most of the books were text-heavy and either overly philosophical or filled with vague psychological catchphrases. Luckily, there is The Book of Doing! A book written plainly and designed to inspire action. Each page is a gem, offering a simple suggested activity that helps you to peel back the layers of your life to explore and evaluate yourself in more creative and innovative way. Upon receiving this book, I flipped it open to page 40, "Design Your Own Insignia" where the exercise asked to create a logo that represented me. I spent the next three days alone thinking about what's my mark on the world. In essence, it's a book that is not meant to be read and study but one that inspires action, new ideas and a renewed way of looking at life and yourself. This book is what self-help book should be! The author is authentic and sincere. She writes as if you're her friend and shares with you the activities that has enriched her own life. The book is not dense text; instead, its filled with visuals, illustrations and space for you to write your responses into the book.

Looking to re-invent yourself, stir up your creativity or gain encouragement to launch your ideas and dreams, then you NEED this book as a reference guide. As a writer myself, its a great tool for writer's block or those looking for a creative breakthrough. Plus, the price is just right! Don't hesitate in buying this book!

Simply amazing!! You won't regret picking up this complete series.

I'm so glad I purchased the complete series. Maddy and Dillon's story kept me flipping the pages and wanting more time with them as their relationship develops on the cruiseline. It was also nice to be given a glimpse into the blue waters of the Caribbean and marine life in this seductive romance. I wished for more time with even the secondary characters, which were not a disappointment

Happily Un-married

I have been in a committed relationship for six years. We began committed and have stayed this way as our relationship deepened. Our relationship has been smooth sailing but when we did finally have a glich it was nice to have Dr. John Curtis help us and offer his book for addional insight. It helped us to get into the depth of our issue and work it through without a separation. I hope anyone considering living together in a life long relationship read this book and apply the principles.

Wonderful Tool!

I have read Dr. Curtis' other book, The Business of Love, and when I saw that he had another relationship book out, I knew I had to read this one too. What a wonderful tool for anyone in a cohabitating relationship, preparing for one, or who knows someone who is in one. It gives very specific tools and information that you and partner can do together to strengthen your relationship. It also helps you deal with other people who may be against you living together. This is a highly recommended book!

Quit Whining and Start Winning with Happily Un-Married

I highly recommend Happily Un-Married to any one who is thinking about living together, getting married or un-happily married. I have given this book as a gift to several young people who were on the fence and need to take a time out to consider all of their options. I love this book because it is objective without a specific agenda. As an expert Whine-ologist and Savvy Granny, I know there is not a one-size fits all for any relationship. Dr. Curtis is not a whiner and but rather a wonderful winner! This book is a great companion book for my survey, Thou shalt Not Whine .....The Eleventh Commandment which will be published next month.

The Dybbuk, by S. An-sky (1863-1920) is the crown jewel of the Jewish theatre, the most renowned, most beloved, most translated , and most performed of all Jewish plays. It was first performed in Yiddish by the Vilna Troupe in Warsaw in 1920, and by the Habima Theatre in Moscow in 1922. It has subsequently been performed thousands of times all over the world in a score of languages. It is still being performed well into the 21st Century. The Hebrew version included here was translated by Ch. Nachman Bialik (1873-1934) from An-sky’s Yiddish play. Bialik is regarded as the most outstanding modern Hebrew poet, and the national poet of Israel. His translation was first published in the journal Hatekufah in Moscow in July 1918. Some critics, as well as An-sky himself have expressed the opinion that the Hebrew translation is superior to the Yiddish original. It is a literary classic in its own right, and is often listed as a major achievement in biographical notices of Bialik. Comparing the texts of the two versions, it is easy to see that the Hebrew is less repetitious, more concise, and less colloquial than the Yiddish. In modern parlance, the translator “tightened” the script. Unfortunately, this Hebrew version has never been performed as such; a shortened, modified version, was developed by Habima under the guidance of the Russian-Armenian director Evgeny Vakhtangov and has been performed hundreds of times. This bilingual edition includes an English translation by Fernando Pe�alosa. The two languages are printed on facing pages. I have been very disappointed in this book

I have been very disappointed in this book. I don't understand why it took nearly one hundred pages to (1) give a basic understanding of what operational DD is and (2) why it's important. Given it's subtitle, "Tools to Evaluate Liquidity, Valuation and Documentation", it should have moved quickly to that. One gets the sense that the book's purpose is to sell the services of Corgentum Consulting, which of course performs operational DD on private equity funds. In short, enough in the book to (1) justify the need for operational DD and (2) tease the reader on CG's ability. This is obviously not the first time that someone has written a book to pitch their services, but it was not what I was expecting. If one is going to buy and read it, I recommend skipping most of the first 90 some odd pages to get to the meat of the book.

As an expert in fraud investigations, I am anxious to read what others are saying about how to protect investors from the ever present threat of fraud, recklessness, and negligence. Far too often I read repetitions of the age old axiom "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," which has proven so ineffective at stopping the scrambling of retirement nest eggs, college endowments, and pension funds. Jason A. Scharfman's Private Equity Operational Due Diligence is different and, for those wise enough to read it, can make a difference between investment success and professional ruin. I enjoyed his observations on why many operational due diligence investigations stop short of a thorough investigation and his answers to the commonly proffered objections to performing a truly thorough investigation. Likewise, his thoughts on effective interview techniques and proper question design are spot on. As a practicing attorney and former SEC Enforcement Attorney, I enjoyed Jason's explanation of how properly to assess a private placement memorandum. That discussion alone stands a good chance of saving fortunes. While his careful assessment of the relevant accounting and mathematical concepts that come into play were over my head, I expect that they hold great wisdom for those trained to understand them. Any investor, investment adviser, or due diligence expert who moves forward with a private equity investment without first reading this book is leaving powerful ammunition unfired. Here is a tool that can help you succeed. Please read it.

Solid overview of a General Partners operations

It seems as if after Madoff, investors may have taken for granted that General Partners knew
what they were doing about operations. Scharfman outlines both how not all General Partners
have best operational practices. While only a handful of private equity funds may be frauds
investors still have to evaluate the quality of fund operations. This book outlines some key
considerations to perform due diligence on including back office trade operations, and service
providers. I also thought the guidance on valuation approaches was very helpful. A good read.
