Review
"..fascinating.."
(Financial Times, 19 Janaury 2002)

From the Inside Flap
Are we merely at the mercy of chance?

We all make hundreds of decisions every day, and mostly with little thought. Unconscious processes are clearly at work. But what part do these unconscious processes play when we come to make the really important decisions?

Decision science assumes that we live in a world where problems arrive one at a time, neatly labelled 'for attention'. In contrast, a key theme of this book is that real situations seldom make sense, and decisions aree rarely clear. Ambiguity always lurks.

The Art of Decision Making stresses reflection and imagination. Its eclectic case studies compel you to keep reading to the end. And by incorporating its insights, you will engage the subtly shifting tides of fortune and ultimately become more powerful.

Read on: anything might yet happen.

Worth the read.
By CuriousPursuit Guy
Really good book. Written out of the UK, so I'm not familiar with a number of the example stories (which I think the assumption is that the reader would be). That said, it's a great overview of why decisions and situations very often go awry and what we can do about it.

As a teenager Jane Bell had dreamt of playing in the casinos of Monte Carlo in the company of James Bond, but in her punk phase she'd got herself pregnant and by the time she reaches forty-six she's a grandmother, her dreams as dry as the dust her Dyson sucks up from her hall carpet every day. Then her son Ross, a researcher working for an arms manufacturer in Switzerland, is forced to disappear before some characters cut from the same cloth as Blofeld persuade him to part with the secrets of his research. But they are not the only ones desperate to locate him. A team of security experts is hired by Ross's firm: headed by the enigmatic Bett, his staff have little in common apart from total professionalism and a thorough disregard for the law. Bett believes the key to Ross's whereabouts is his mother, and in one respect he is right, but even he is taken aback by the verve underlying her determination to secure her son's safety as she learns the black arts of quiet subterfuge and violent attack. The teenage dreams of fast cars, high-tech firepower and extreme action had always promised to be fun and games, but in real life it's likely someone is going to lose an eye...

Review
'Sharply satirical and poignantly funny, this is a gripping and highly entertaining read.' Time Out 'Chris Brookmyre is a genius.' Mirror 'Brookmyre has no equal.' Maxim 'Exhilarating linguistic fluency and keenly subversive intelligence' Scotland on Sunday

About the Author
Chris Brookmyre was a journalist before becoming a full time novelist with the publication of QUITE UGLY ONE MORNING (recently televised starring James Nesbitt). Since the publication of A BIG BOY DID IT AND RAN AWAY he and his family decided to move away from Aberdeen and now live near Glasgow.

OK, so I wouldn't look that good in a wetsuit....
By Dr. J. Shoaf
.... being a short fat granny instead of a tall thin one like Jane Bell, this novel's heroine. Plus it's a long time since I was a mere 46 years old. However, this book is a tasty guilty pleasure for me and probably for a lot of other women whose lives have been deficient in sports cars, casinos, guns, and castles in the South of France. Really, it seems to have been written on a dare: a complicated James Bond plot (whose protagonists have already seen the movies) in which the main character is a housewife. Jane has heretofore expended her adrenaline raising kids and overcleaning the house, but when her family is threatened by what turns out to be cadres of drug and arms dealers, she does what needs to be done. I would love to see a movie of this, though by the time the plot is resolved it has folded in on itself a few more times than a script could probably handle. There is something very satisfying, about the fact that football fandom is presented as a kind of universal masculine numbness.
Anyway, very funny novel, highly recommended for any woman who has time to read a novel.

Scottish suburban mother w/ fondness for Bond films kicks armdealer ass.
By J. T. Walker
I think my husband is jealous-- Christopher Brookmyre makes me laugh aloud. Often. Which my (surprise, we live in L.A.) screenwriter husband has noted. At times with an edge in his voice. But it's all fun and games. I am a fan of Brookmyre's other books, all worth reading. The sweetness underlying all the action is charming, as is the intelligence of the characters. Fully enjoyable, if a bit addictive.

If you fail to read Brookmyre before you die, you haven't lived.
By Robert Forrester
Once upon a time, I was having a pint of IPA with a professor of law, who also happened to have served as a QC and a judge before he retired. As both of us were avid fans of the crime fiction genre, I mentioned to him that I was beginning to run out of authors I really took to: having worked my way through from Raymond Chandler to James Ellroy, Henning Mankell and all points inbetween and beyond, so, could he recommend anyone to me? He promptly suggested Christopher Brookmyre, but qualified this by saying that 'You might find his imagination a tad twisted, but after what I've had to listen to in my time, Brookmyre sounds disturbingly normal.' Undeterred, I immediately purchased Brookmyre's first novel: 'Quite Ugly One Morning' and fell off my chair in a fit of laughter at the end of the first sentence! Maybe it's something about having been a resident of Glasgow that sends the synapses sparking in all sorts of contorted and deranged directions, but, Brookmyre's imagery, ingenuity, insight and acuity are second to none. Furthermore, you must pay attention to the detail. Basically, he has three threads to his works. The first follows the ludicrous, almost infantile but utterly hilarious, adventures of Jack Parlabane. The second: the heroic struggle of a Catholic Rangers supporting copper called Angelique de Xavier, in love with a quite magical bank robber, against the evil, thoroughly evil, machinations of an almost reasonable maniac called Simon Darcourt. Then, finally, the really serious stuff in his trilogy covering the accidental private investigator Jasmine Sharp in her random quest to find out where she came from, with a bit of assistance from a Fallen Angel. Brookmyre is nothing short of brilliant, especially with his Jasmine Sharp trilogy (which really ought to be read in sequence to get the full gist. 1:'Where the Bodies are Buried', 2: When the Devil Drives', and, best of all, 3: 'Flesh Wounds' - 'wounds' as a verb not a noun). He is also the kind of individual who wears his politics up, down and all around his sleeves. Miss him at your peril.

The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, Book 2), by Rick Riordan

Percy is confused. When he awoke after his long sleep, he didn't know much more than his name. His brain-fuzz is lingering, even after the wolf Lupa told him he is a demigod and trained him to fight. Somehow Percy managed to make it to the camp for half-bloods, despite the fact that he had to continually kill monsters that, annoyingly, would not stay dead. But the camp doesn't ring any bells with him.

Hazel is supposed to be dead. When she lived before, she didn't do a very good job of it. When the Voice took over her mother and commanded Hazel to use her "gift" for an evil purpose, Hazel couldn't say no. Now, because of her mistake, the future of the world is at risk.

Frank is a klutz. His grandmother claims he is descended from ancient heroes and can be anything he wants to be, but he doesn't see it. He doesn't even know who his father is. He keeps hoping Apollo will claim him, because the only thing he is good at is archery-although not good enough to help the Fifth Cohort win at war games. His big and bulky physique makes him feel like a clumsy ox, especially in front of Hazel, his closest friend at camp. He trusts her completely-enough, even, to share the secret he holds close to his heart.

Beginning at the "other" camp for half-bloods and extending as far north as the land beyond the gods, this breathtaking second installment in the Heroes of Olympus series introduces new demigods, revives fearsome monsters, and features other remarkable creatures, all of whom are destined to play a part in the most important quest of all: the Prophecy of Seven.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, October 2011: From the Roman demigod camp to the prison of Death himself, The Son of Neptune reunites readers with old friends and introduces them to a whole new cast of characters. The Roman camp is a far cry from Camp Half-Blood, but it’s every bit as fascinating to explore. Our heroes battle up and down the West Coast with impossibly few days before disaster is unleashed, fighting new foes and finding new friends along the way. Some of the mysteries from The Lost Hero are solved, while others loom even larger. Rick Riordan is a master at balancing just the right amount of seriousness and levity in every situation, and his three teen narrators point out the strangeness of the iterations of ancient myths in the modern world with spot-on accuracy. With page-turning adventure, witty dialogue, and fun, fascinating characters, this second installment of the Heroes of Olympus series is a must-read for any fan of myths and fables. --Malissa Kent

Review
5Q 5P M J Riordan's original demigod hero returns to the spotlight in this highly anticipated second book in the Heroes of Olympus series. With two indestructible gorgons hunting him, an amnesiac Percy Jackson arrives at Camp Jupiter, the Roman equivalent of the secret Greek demigod camp, Camp Half-Blood. There he learns that Death has been imprisoned and that the titan Gaea is assembling an army of escaped souls and immortal monsters to reclaim the world from the gods. Percy embarks on a seemingly impossible quest to free Death before Gaea's army obliterates Camp Jupiter. At his side are two new Roman friends: Hazel Levesque, who conceals mysteries about her past, and Frank Zhang, who wonders about his immortal lineage and likewise harbors his own secrets. Together they journey to the land beyond the gods to fulfill a prophecy and to each assume a role as one of the seven heroes of Olympus. Riordan's seamless weaving of various cultural mythologies into a modern landscape continues to shine in Son of Neptune. As in previous books, the plot is engrossing, the characters robust and compelling. Percy, Frank, and Hazel alternate as narrators without missing a beat of pace, suspense, or humor. Readers will find themselves automatically consumed by the story without having read the first book, though some knowledge of Percy's previous adventures will help fill in minor gaps of background information. Son of Neptune is yet another absorbing and exciting addition to Riordan's chronicles.-Grace Enriquez. VOYA"

After spinning his wheels in series opener The Lost Hero (2010), Riordan regains his traction with book two of The Heroes of Olympus. Gaea is raising an army of giants to defeat the gods, and Juno has switched heroes Percy Jackson (son of Poseidon) and Jason Grace (son of Jupiter) in order to unite Greek and Roman gods and demigods in battle against her. His memory wiped, Percy knows only that he has another life and a girlfriend, Annabeth; he needs to focus now on winning the trust of the Roman demigods. As per usual, he has two appealing companions with intriguing back stories, Hazel Levesque (daughter of Pluto) and Frank Zhang (son of ?). The three undertake a quest to Alaska to defeat the giant Alcyoneus and free Thanatos, "the border patrol" of the Underworld, assisted and opposed along the way by a pleasing variety of magical beings. Riordan achieves freshness within his formula by giving characters and readers a new environment-Camp Jupiter, similar only in broad concept to Camp Half-Blood-to discover, and his pell-mell pacing has returned. As with all of Riordan's mythological tales, the details that bring the legends into the 21st century delight: The camp's augur reads the entrails of Beanie Babies; tiny, malignant grain spirits dissolve into Chex Mix; the Amazons' headquarters are in Seattle at, well, you guessed it. Should pacing and wit continue unabated into the third volume, whose foretold European setting promises further freshness, fans will eagerly await numbers four and five. (Fantasy. 10-14) Kirkus"

Percy Jackson is back! Following his absence in The Lost Hero (2010), book 1 of the Heroes of Olympus series, Percy returns to fight another day, and another, and another, and yes, several others. As the story begins, he clashes with two Gorgons and finds Camp Jupiter, the modern West Coast refuge for demigods. There, he befriends Frank and Hazel, who join his quest to free Thanatos (aka Death) from Gaea's evil minions in Alaska. Personal challenges, fierce battles, and self-discovery await the three teen demigods, even as Percy struggles with amnesia. Though diverse in ethnicity, physical characteristics, and magical gifts, Percy's friends in both series seem relatively interchangeable. Still, Riordan creates an original minor character in Ella, the lovable harpy. While the narrative includes lengthy explanations, flashbacks, and dreams, there is plenty of fast-paced action, including combat scenes with formidable enemies, as well as occasional comic relief. Along the way, readers will learn more about both the ancient Roman gods and the Roman legions. Fans will find plenty to cheer about as Percy and his allies move slowly toward fulfilling the mysterious Prophecy of Seven. - Carolyn Phelan Booklist"

The Adventure Continues!
By Whittie Pie
What the what?!
Just when I think Riordan can't get any better, he proves me wrong. The Son of Neptune was a thrilling, exciting, crazy, and absolutely bizarre adventure, and I loved every second of it.
The way that the chapters are split up between perspectives really works and I love that Riordan continues this through the series. The opportunity to read from several mind sets adds so much depth to the story. I so appreciate Riordan's writing prowess when it comes to this fact; he knew that if such massive books had only one perspective, boredom would endure.
I know that some people complain about the corny writing and jokes made throughout both PJO and HoO, but for me, that's part of the fun of it. The humor that is infused into each book is my favorite part, even if it is corny. I've laughed harder at the Percy Jackson books than any other book series I've read. For example, in this book, I loved the line about "Centurion Shish Kebab," and "The Doors of Me," too.
As much as I love Jason, Piper, and Leo from the debut book of Heroes of Olympus, I love Hazel and Frank just as much. I love that Frank got to unleash his boss side and take down some baddies. Hazel, that girl has some fire in her, and I love it!
As usual, the side characters brought so much to the story. Reyna is growing on me; now there's a boss. Octavian, though. What's that joker up to?
I find New Rome to be such a fascinating place. But one question: why does Rome get an entire city and Greece only gets a camp? This needs to be remedied pronto.
After finishing this book, I have so many questions that need answering!
What happened to Frank's grandmother?
Will the Seven finally be united?
Where is Nico? Is he ok?
Where does Sally Jackson think Percy is?
Who is officially dating whom?

Percy's Back!! ... as The Son of Neptune
By babyruthy83
I am really liking this whole Roman aspect of the gods… but mostly, I love that Percy’s back! I missed him. Another thing I loved: his entire memory is wiped, but he remembers Annabeth’s name… and that is enough. Rick Riordan knows how to show some appreciation for Percy’s adoring fans.

Percy is at his most impressive in The Son of Neptune. The story begins as he battles two comical gorgons in Bargain Mart greeter vests, who carry some poisonous discount snacks — I must admit, I developed a soft spot for Stheno. He carries “old hippy-lady / Juno” across a highway — where he meets my new favorite demigods, Hazel Levesque (daughter of Hades) and Frank Zhang (… with quite the extraordinary heritage, even for a demigod) — across the Tiber River, and into Camp Jupiter. Here he is able to show off his vast power over water, crushing the gorgons, and saving Frank’s life. Finally, Juno reveals that horrible things are about to happen, and so they will need Percy. During the camp’s version of capture-the-flag, the 5th cohort (Percy’s new group and laughingstock of the camp) pulls off a tremendous win, causing Ares — I mean, Mars — to show himself and present the plucky trio with a prophecy and a quest. Granted, his prophesy is not as mysterious and rhyme-y as we are accustomed, but it gets the job done: “Go to Alaska. Find Thanatos. Come back by sundown on June twenty-fourth or die.” Did I mention Thanatos/Death has been captured… thus, the bad guys just won’t die?

This is one of the best adventures for Percy so far! There is humor, heart, action, all kinds of monsters, Roman myths, and suspense through the entire quest.

There are many things I like about this book
By Goldmine
This book picks straight up from The Lost Hero were it is shown that Percy has lost his memory. All through the book Percy is trying to get his memory back. Other friends are trying to find Percy as well. Also a traitor is trying to kill Percy.

There are many things I like about this book. The first thing is that there always funny moments that would always force you too laugh. Another thing I like is that there is suspension that makes your jaw drop. The final thing I like is that it is very creative.

However there are some things I dislike about this book. There are some moments in the book that are repeated over and over again. Another thing I disliked about this book was that the book was to short being only 400 when the lost hero was 500. The final thing I dislike about this book is that Percy's character traits have changed to much.

Many people claim that the book is very bad. To that I respond could you write better? Some people claim this book is a wannabe Harry Potter. To that I respond it is a completely different story line.

All in all, this book was great and Rick Riordan has done it again bringing back Percy almost how he was before. It had it's ups and downs but overall it was amazing. I can't wait for the next book and that it has elements such as this.

What an incredible story. Despite all the hardship and struggles, against all odds, Zak was able to choose peace over hate, brutality, revenge, and bigotry. It is possible and this is one proof.
