About the Author

KAILASH KAPUR, PHD, is a Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering at the University of Washington, where he was also the Director from 1993 to 1999. Dr. Kapur has worked with General Motors Research Laboratories as a senior research engineer, Ford Motor Company as a visiting scholar, and the U.S. Army, Tank-Automotive Command as a reliability engineer. He is a Fellow of ASQ and IIE, and a registered professional engineer.

MICHAEL PECHT, PHD, is the founder of CALCE (Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering) at the University of Maryland, which is funded by over 150 of the world’s leading electronics companies. He is also a Chair Professor in Mechanical Engineering and a Professor in Applied Mathematics at the University of Maryland. He consults for twenty-two major international electronics companies.

Excellent coverage for conceptual understanding

This book provides an up to date discussion of product reliability development and management through the product life cycle. The concentration is not on modeling or extensive math and statistics (although there is necessarily some), but primarily the elements of a good reliability program leading to conceptual understanding and effective management. The physics of failure discussions are broad brush and do not cover the multitude of models available, but more the profound knowledge gained in 50+ years of testing and experience. The emphasis on life cycle profile development is right on target along with its consideration of multiple stresses with references provided for the details. The concept that quality and manufacturing variation control impacts reliability is supported by a chapters on part selection, supplier and statistical process control. Evidence is provided of the ineffectiveness and damaging effects of burn in and extra handling with a surprising recommendation to minimize and even avoid environmental stress screening based upon some studies. The failure analysis section covers No Fault Found and provides a process that helps direct where resources should be applied to make faults more detectable. This is a worthwhile addition to your reliability library and can communicate to those responsible to lead and define the vision for a reliability organization.

Alchian and Allen's Exchange & Production is the book that made me an economist... again. It is sad that the book has not been reprinted or updated. A translation in spanish would have been a great benefit for spanish speaking economists who often rely on translations of more popular (yet not so great) intro economic textbooks. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in sharpening his skills as an economist.

The best book I know on microeconomics

I just retired after a 40 year career as an economist. I studied under both Alchian and Allen at UCLA in the 1960s and then went to UC Berkeley for my Ph.D. During my 40 year career (as well as in graduate school), the economics I learned from Alchian, Allen, and my other UCLA professors gave me the foundation for a successful career. Anyone serious about microeconomics should read and re-read this book.

Amazing and inspiring true story!

It's hard to believe what terror and pain this boy and his family went through as his country of Belgium was occupied by Germany during World War II. The story came to life for me as the author shares intense, personal details about his family and the shocking, horror of the war. His unique perspectives as a child were honest, poignant, and sometimes humorous. I was so involved in the story that I was sorry when it ended; but there's a sequel! I'm looking forward to the next book, An Immigrant Story".

Into the Ring and Out into a New Universe

This is the fourth book in the seven book Expanse series (and did you know that the series might be a long as nine books?). Each book goes "Where no man has gone before..." farther and farther out into the universe and the ride is not without a few bumps.

This book pushes settlers (originally from Ganymede) out through the Ring into a brand new universe. They're willing to settle on an entirely unknown planet. Things must've been really really, really bad where they came from (which is true if you've read the earlier books).

In each of the books, you have the UN/Mars/OPA, a corporation (Protogen in the early books, Mao-Kwikowski Mercantile next, and Royal Charter Energy ("RCE") in the current book), the inhabitants of a moon (or settlers) and the crew of the Rocinante.

RCE has the "charter", a governor, and a shipful of scientists and supplies bound for the planet the settlers call "Ilus" and RCE calls "Bering Survey Four" or "New Terra" or "24771912-F23" and it was "sitting smack dab in the middle of the Goldilocks Zone" (every planetary system has to have one of these).

RCE must've never watched any Sci-Fi on TV because the organization of the captain, crew, and passengers has an entirely sovereign security group led by moderately cloaked psychopath. What could go wrong?

The scientists are smart, funny, and plausible (not that I'm a scientist).

Amos in the book seems bigger and balder than the actor playing him in the TV series (but Wes Chatham is permanently Amos in my head now). Amos suggested taking some supplies with them on a reconnoiter and Holden said no. "Later," Amos said, "when you're wishing we had this stuff, I am going to be merciless in my mockery. And then we'll die."

Bobbie Draper is mentioned in the Prologue and then in the Epilogue. This is just a tease for the next book. Okay, so I'm looking forward to the next book.

"One hundred and thirteen times a second..." What's the significance of this frequency? Just another tease like mentioning Bobbie Draper at the beginning and end of the book?

It was nice to see a return of Havelock, the Earther cop who worked with Miller back for Star Helix Security on Ceres and he has a moderately heroic role.

The Martians have a spaceship named after astronaut Sally Ride.

This book (the Kindle version) occasionally missing opening double quotes through out. Not consistently, just enough to pop the needle out of the vinyl groove about once a chapter. Too often.

New Audio Narration Available by Jefferson Mays - Avasarala sounds like Avasarala again - Yay Amazon and Audible for listening!

UPDATE 3/30/2017 --- Yesterday I got an update email from Amazon saying that the audio narration has been updated:

The original recording has now been replaced with a new performance by Jefferson Mays. If you own this audiobook, simply re-download it from your library to access the new recording."""

I downloaded the new narration and rejoiced in the sweet tones and characterizations we have all come to enjoy from Jefferson Mays. I almost cried. Although I am 2/3 of the way through the book, I am happy to listen to the rest via audio now because of this.

OLD REVIEW CONCERNING PREVIOUS NARRATION:
This review pertains to (mostly) the audio narration which is the worst audio narration I've listened to for any book in my life. I'm about 30% through this book at this point. The first three books have great audio narration and I was really looking forward to listening to this one. Where and why Amazon/Audible decided to hire this brainless and belligerent narrator is beyond me. Firstly, the narrator obviously hadn't listened to the previous narrator's reads of the previous books to provide any sense of continuity. Secondly, this narrator tries to 'act' the characters and does a really poor job. Unfortunately, he reads this book like it is a dime store Western/Romance novel. All the men have western cowboyish accents and all the women are read as either breathy or breathless voices. It is beyond distracting. And, even worse, this new dumb narrator's acting interpretation of Christian Avasarala is a out of breath woman on the verge of hysterics rather than the appropriate biting cynical political genius with an Indian accent. Those characters he deems not of the cowboy or helpless woman type of voice he gives either a super poor australian accent or some mixture of transylvanian/slavic (seriously sounds like a bad Dracula voice for someone with a middle eastern name). Even more unfortunate is that he has decided to provide an American Indian accent to the ghostly character of Miller. WTH!!!

So, if you enjoy cheap western novels and want a book of the expanse series read to you in this way, you will have no problem with this book. If you've listened to the narration from the previous books and expect the same 'feel' of narration, skip it for this one. You'll go stark raving mad. There is hope however, for the subsequent novel narration as it reverts back to the first narrator. From wiki: This narrator's name is Erik Davies (you should be fired) and is only for Cibola Burn and the novellas Gods of Risk and The Churn. All the others are the narrator Jefferson Mays.

Dear Amazon/Audible: If you switch narrators in a series, your quality control (I'm sure you have none) needs to require that the new narrator provide narration continuity. I wish I could get my money back for the audio purchase of this book. Please hire Jefferson Mays to record narration for Cibola Burn, Gods of Risk, and The Churn to replace the TERRIBLE narration of Erik Davies. Erik Davies should only be hired to record narration for awful cheap dime store Western novels. If the authors are reading this and have any pull, ask Amazon/Audible to fix this. You almost lost me as a reader.

As far as the novel goes, it is a slow starter and more boring and world building type of novel than the first three. So go into it with that in mind. Maybe by the end something cool will happen but I'm not there yet.

I got pulled into reading/listening to the novels by watching the TV series. Has been totally worth my time until I encountered this exceptionally poor narration.

Good read, but slipping a bit.

As other reviewers have said, this is really a transitional novel at its core. I see it now, after finishing the last few pages, but while I was actually reading, I kept hoping that around the next bend some mystery and awe might show up. It never really did. A few parts here and there tickled some curiosity, but they were fleeting.

The writers are starting to lose me a bit with the overly scripted dialogue. Everyone always has such a sly, witty and crafted response for even the most meaningless banter. I've noticed it in the novels prior to this one, but the fact that I now roll my eyes through half of the conversations in the story tells me something ain't right. Its starting to give the entire cast of characters a homogeneous quality that stunts any personality growth and diminishes distinction between them.

Also, and this might just be a pet-peeve, but the trendy, 2014, internet-distributed phrases have to go too. There is something so nice about reading a novel that is timeless in it's writing. One that can be suggestive of the era when it was written, but isn't obvious to a fault. I'm not talking about writing it into the story on purpose to suggest a timeframe (like a character saying "that'd be swell!" in a novel that takes place in 1950s America), but rather an author that writes with popular buzzwords and phrases. I doubt the 70-something Chrisjen Avasarala would say "Because Mars." instead of "Because of Mars." just because Buzzfeed writers and Facebook parrots do. "I know, right?"

I just wish those little details could be massaged out of this otherwise great series.

The pros are still the pros: the ride as a whole is fun, descriptive and visually satisfying. Though it is my least favorite of the bunch thus far, it was still pretty enjoyable and I'm very much looking forward to the next novel.

One of the best fantasy series ever written

After reading almost all of the top 100 fantasy books, this series is among the best of all them. I was hesitant to read this series because I thought it might be a cheesy rendition of D&D - I could not have been more wrong - and there is nothing wrong D&D I grew up playing it and spend a great deal of time playing fantasy RPG games as well. Anyone that loves fantasy needs to read all of these books, there is no question that Dridzzt is the best character ever created across all genres. The world is amazing, the plot, and all of the characters are richly developed. I should note I was also originally also scared off from this book by many of the reviews that state this would be a good starter book into the fantasy realm - I read into that incorrectly that this would be a light fantasy book trying to appease the masses. I am a hardcore fantasy reader and those reviews turned me off. This is a fantasy book for the most devote readers. I do think it is also a good introduction for new readers, but it is possibly the longest series ever written, so you have to really like fantasy to read them all. You cannot go wrong with this book, if you are debating it, just do as I did - get a free sample from Amazon and then purchase the book. In no time you will find yourself reading through the entire seasons. Truly a masterpiece!!!!

I usually enjoy books of other fiction genres but my best friend, who is hugely into fantasy, told me this was his favorite book and so I gave it a try. It is definitely a good read even if you're new to the genre like I was! It's one of my favorite books now and I already ordered the others in the trilogy.

Pros:
Good character development (you basically see the main character grow up and how he changes and goes through trials)
Super interesting plot (one of my favorite parts about this novel)
Interesting species and creatures
Simplistic writing (the words aren't too lengthy or overbearing so if you don't like being bogged down by heavy, superfluous wording, then this is preferable)
Great for if you're new to fantasy (probably experienced readers would like it too, although I was not one)
Violence isn't overtly graphic or descriptive so more sensitive readers will probably be fine
If you're getting a physical copy of the book, mine came new and in perfect condition
Overall, hard to put down
Cons:
At times scenes can be vague or confusing and you might need to reread them to understand what took place (not a problem for me but may be for others).

Good beginning to Drizzt

I barely know anything about Dungeons and Dragons or Forgotten Realms. I'd previously encountered Salvatore in Vector Prime and liked his work. I was looking for a new fantasy series to read and decided to check this one out.

It's pretty good. Salvatore does excellent worldbuilding but he doesn't get bogged down with it either. I'm not even going to try to spell the name of their city right now, but it's a subterranean place that's very dark and full of stalagmites etc. The plot is kind of Game of Thronesy with a lot of noble houses competing for power, but with a twist in that it's all matriarchal and treacherous. It's not a particularly likable place and that's the point, it's a horrible place! I'm excited that Drizzt escaped from it. I'm curious to see where the story goes from here. I can't say I love it because this very much feels like the introduction to a bigger thing.

Kern Fellingham mistook Jemma for her sister an actress, Christine. Kern kidnaps Jemma and takes her to a tumbled down hut. For punishment he makes her clean up the hut.
Christine is having an affair with Kern's nephew. Christine is being evicted, and she would do almost anything to stay in the apartment, so Kern promises her a lease if she will go with him.
She goes and Kern soon learns she isn't a self centered selfish money hungry harpy.
He learns Christine is loving and kind, as well as beautiful..
Then he learns she is Jemma not Christine.
He loves her and he wants her to love him.
I feel Susan Fox, the late great Betty Neels, Rebecca Winters, and Helen Brooks.

This book is okay but a dry read!

One would think that if they are writing about communication that they would gear it to their audience, which I feel they miss by far, as the author uses lots of large words in description of giving definitions to various Business things! If the average people out there read at an eighth grade level and the news paper is geared to an eighth grade level you would think that the author would write this book at an eight grade level. One thing about communication that I know if you talk over someone or some people that is not effective communication if the receiver of the person to be communicated to does not understand what is being said to them! I am in college and I am not quite yet up there at working on my doctor-en degree! The authors also must understand that not everyone's best way to learn is by reading, we do not all learn well that way, as some of us are visual learners, audio learners, hands-on learners, and so on and some may be a combination of each.
This book was not written very well for it's audience it was intended, as most people agree in my class that it is a very dry read! Unfortunately, this was a mandatory book for my Business Communication Class in college, which I am sure their are better books on this subject out there!

This book wasn't the correct edition. However, the chapters are roughly the same but in a different order than then 8th edition. I would definitely recommend this the hardcover (4th edition) if you don't have enough for the 8th edition.
