A small gem of a novel from the Emerald Isle

Nothing like waiting out wicked winter weather and a bad cold with the companionship of a good piece of chick lit, especially when it comes from one of the great and gifted Irish storytellers.

Once upon a time I was a regular Maeve Binchy reader, but I'd long ago drifted away--having grown tired of too many plots based around class issues and out-of-wedlock pregnancies and miserable marriages there was no way out of--and I'd moved on to other authors like Colm Toibin, William Trevor, Anabel Davis Goff and Deirdre Madden. But when I was offered an opportunity to get an advance look at the newest Binchy novel, I took it and I'm glad I did. I'd forgotten how gifted Binchy is at creating a cast of characters you quickly come to care about and bringing them and their stories so vividly to life.

While misery, unwed motherhood, unrequited love and alcoholism all figure prominently into this story, they're more than balanced out by the determined efforts and optimism of a can-do American cousin and the arrival of a motherless child. Watching cousin Emily and wee Frankie give a whole neighborhood a new lease on life makes for a very good read and I recommend it.

Heartwarming and Lovely ...

Every single time I pick up a Maeve book, it is like coming home after a long exhausting trip and falling into that comfortable easy chair, with the endless cups of hot tea at your side and all the favorite characters in Dublin hovering around ... if only life can be that comforting!! I read Maeve for the reasons I have stated above and for the fact that she really is a talented writer, who manages to keep the reader's interest in ordinary characters. Ordinary characters with ordinary concerns and issues ... and yet somehow she makes them special and interesting. She writes compellingly of life in Ireland that some day I must go there and see with my own eyes the beautiful land she loves so deeply.

I was so excited to get this advanced copy that I managed to read this within two days ... it helps that I am snowed in as well. I hated to see the end of this book as I didn't want to let go of the characters. I hope Binchy will write another one soon ... especially about that annoying social worker, Moira. I'd like to know what happened to her!! She is probably the most annoying and pathetic character I have yet to read from Binchy's collection. Unable to grasp that a recovering alcoholic can raise a baby and do it so well with the love and support of so many, Moira always expect the worst of people.

A lot of familiar characters have been re-introduced such as Muttie and Lizzie Scarlet, the twins, Noel, the young and dashing doctor who is happily married and his parents; they all play a minor role in this novel but their lives are entwined with Noel, the young father mentioned above. Noel was a drifting loner, bored out of his skull with his life and finding solace in the bottom of his cups. His parents were more concerned about their religious convictions and didn't know what to do with their lonely, morose son. Then one day, a former flame contacted Noel and told him that he's the father of her unborn child. Noel, who had just decided to stop drinking and do something with his life, was stunned and overwhelmed, but with the support of his parents and his American cousin, Emily (who really was the glue of everyone in the community), he agreed to raise the motherless baby. Even with the constant scrutiny of the social worker, Moira, Noel manages to turn his life around.

This is such a heart-warming novel and full of interesting characters. Some will say this is a predictable book but there are times in life when a novel like this one just is the cure for what ails you. It is full of interesting characters and stories, told only by a talented author like Maeve can.

Maeve's fans will love this book as well ... so don't hesitate to pick up this book!!

A Timeless Novel

There is something comforting in a Maeve Binchy novel. There are no pyrotechnics or earth-shattering histrionics in MINDING FRANKIE yet it manages to hold and keep one's attention throughout. I think it is Binchy's unparalleled knack for creating characters one truly cares about. Even the most reviled character in this wonderful book (Moira Tierney...the social worker from Hell) is relatable as we come to know her life's circumstances.

You will find yourself rooting for the protagonist at the heart of MINDING FRANKIE. Noel is an ex-alcoholic who is teetering precariously on the precipice of sobriety when he is faced with raising a baby on his own. The cast of characters he surrounds himself with are all supportive and come to his aid when he needs help with Frankie, the baby girl he "inherits." The characters are the real heart of this novel. They are funny, sympathetic, flawed and real people whom we come to know well and identify with. I couldn't wait to crawl into bed each night and escape to the Emerald Isle with all my new "friends."

While we are introduced to new characters in MINDING FRANKIE there are a lot of familiar faces from Binchy's previous works. This is a stand-alone novel, but many of the characters were introduced in other books such as QUENTINS, SCARLET FEATHER and HEART AND SOUL. It is not necessary to read the other books before starting MINDING FRANKIE, but it certainly enhances the reading experience by having a past with them.

The reason I called this book timeless is because if it weren't for the occasional reference to cell phones, the internet and other modern conveniences one would find it diificult to determine if this book takes place in 1950 or 2011. The story is classic and transcends time.

The one criticism I could find is that there are a LOT of characters to keep track of, and the author often refers to them by first-name only. I had to stop reading several times and go back and try to figure out how they fit in. It is a minor criticism of a book I truly loved. I highly recommend this book if you like calming, character-driven well told tales.

He, too, changes, as he physically takes on an array of new shades, but retains his blue heart. The brief text is balanced by simple, computer-colored brush and India-ink artwork. The illustrations begin with blue pages and move through the spectrum as Blue and Polly expand their horizons. Throughout their travels, the duo's contrasting shade stands out, creating a feeling of isolation. The youngster's change of palette colorfully reflects the story's underlying message. Finally, the travelers arrive in a bright, exciting multicolor city--but there's no blue. Blue has an idea. He writes a blue poem, and paints a blue picture. Now there's a little blue in the city as well as more color in him after he breathes in the hues from outdoors. There's a lot to like here. The simple story will appeal to preschoolers, who will also be caught up by the colorful images, impressively outlined in black and drenched in pure color. Robert Neubecker is a contributor to Slate.com, Business Week, Time, the Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times.

Blue and his best friend Polly are heading out of their blue land for a world adventure. They want to live a more colorful life than the blue one they currently live in. The lands they visit are orange, pink, purple, green, yellow and red. After traveling for awhile, they visit a city that's unlike anything they've seen before. In this city, every color, but blue, is visible.

Blue becomes frightened because there is no blue, anywhere! Can he find the courage to introduce the color blue into a land that doesn't have it?

Artist and author Robert Neubecker's subtle suggestion to children is: show and share your true colors (self) to the world. It will be a better place for everyone if they do.

But I wonder if the message is too subtle. It provides the adult reader to discuss the meaning with the children. And that's a good thing.

It seems that the message we're giving kids is always one of caution. We warn them about everything that we don't want them to do and consequently forget to remind them of the good things to do. This book encourages those wonderful parts of life, like exploring and learning, and shows how rewarding they can be. Neubecker's colorful illustrations and endearing characters ensure that young readers and parents will be entertained and educated.

After reading the reviews and the sample I expected a book with hot sex and some unusual situations. But this far exceeded my wildest dreams and expectations. Usually I prefer erotic stories to have romance but that wasn't necessary here.

The reason I say that is Ms. Black develops the characters of Chloe and Mark so wonderfully before and during their chance meting that you just know they are going to get busy with nothing but lust on thier agendas. What sets this book apart from other erotic tales I have read, however, is the last act that takes place before everyone is sexually satisfied. No spoiler but if you are not blown away by it, then you must be a real life Chloe!

The sex scenes themselves are also written in a manner not usually found in most erotic stories. The reader doesn't just get a play by play account of who did what to the other's body part. Ms. Black will take you into the mind of the lovers so the reader can understand what these characters are thinking and emotionally feeling as well as being in the throes of passion or in orgasmic bliss. These characteristics are expressed very well for Chloe, Mark, and Mikki, a third character introduced later in the story.

It was mentioned to try to read this with one hand on the Kindle. I am saving this book and I may need to learn that talent next time! What a fantastic read, especially when you want hot sexual scenes. Absolutely worth the time and price!

Ms. Black introduces us to Chloe and gives the reader a taste of what Chloe likes and what she can do. With one or more partners...

In the beginning, Ms. Black had me wondering what Chloe is capable of. What does she like? As I kept reading, there was no disappointment! Chloe satisfies her partners and the reader!

Is there a DLFD Part 2 in the works? I sure hope so, because the adventures of Chloe Sykes will never be boring!

I'm looking forward to reading more from Eleanor Black. Her DLFD already has me hooked on her future books!

I was drawn head first into the preview and HAD to buy the full book. Wow. You will literally be all sorts of hot and bothered by reading just the first few chapter. I had no idea that you anyone could describe such an experience with all the nitty gritty details down to the tee. I had to take a shower afterwards to feel clean. Hot as hell and worth every penny. Loved it and looking forward to more tales of Chloe. Please tell me there are more?

Some good stuff but it could have been a thinner book

I've re-read this book and changed my opinion about it for the better, so I decided to edit my earlier not-so-positive review. There is some good info in this book about crossing the Atlantic and arriving at different destinations.
There's also a fair amount of chatty, tangiential small talk. In parts of the book, I found myself skimming paragraph after paragraph looking for a substantive point. The auther touches superficially on miscelaneous cruising and sailing subjects that are treated far better in many other well-known general books on cruising.
However, there is some decent detail on what to expect on various Atlantic cruising routes. So it's worth a read if you're contemplating a long cruise.

horrible. pass this one, stick with the Spin cover article

I've read a lot of biographies in my day, a number of which being music related. Up until today, the worst I've ever read was Mick Middles' excuse of a bio about The Smiths back when they were still a band. And then I came across John Mendelssohn's "Gigantic"and I'm pondering how best to discard this worthless excuse for a tome without violating several laws.

This book is poorly researched, needlessly snarky, and lacks a decent sense of humor that the author was hoping to put across. Naturally, the lack of research is really the most important aspect: a good biography is well-researched; a good band biography will go into some depth about each member of the band and their background. Was it really to hard to include how Kim's dad wanted to learn guitar but when he saw his daughter play he gave up?

Half the book is filled with chapters of fiction, and after reading the first of these chapters, about a teenage girl who is unattractive but wholy attracted to using the word "like" as much as possible, I gave up and skipped these chapters. Much like I gave up on the book with only a handful of chapters to go.

One word: unnecessary. This is an unnecessary book that's only benefit is looking at the cool pictures to keep yourself from throwing it upon a fire. Omnibus Press should be wholly ashamed to have put an unattributed quote touting the book as "the most in-depth accoun of the Pixies carrer ever published." [...]
I wonder if my local library would take this as a donation. Probably not.

Gigantic waste of time

All the reviews here have made may day complete. I too have spent a saturday of my life trawling through this beautifully packaged sack of garbage. And I too resent having spent time on it, if I lived in the States maybe I could sue this guy for mental hardship and the negative effect his book has had on my life. My wife too has had too listen to me rant and explode at the end of every chapter. Fortunately we are still in a honeymoon period and she find sthis cute. It could have sent a less harmonious couple to the divorce court. Everything everybody has brought up is true: It IS the worst music bio you've ever read. The writing style is lazy, repetetive and annoying....the constant jokes about Frank putting on weight are pointles, childish and uncalled for...e.g. "Charles played a couple of shows around thanksgiving this year, presumably filled up with turkey, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings". It is pitifully under-researched and the author seems to actually hate the subject he's writing about. If you have bought it, then you have every right to take it back and demand your money back (under English law goods must be "fit for the purpose for which they are sold"....well this paper isn't anywhere near absorbant enough to wipe your arse on, and you aren't going to get anywhere reading the damn thing)

The only good point is it is short. Like most book nerds I can't admit defeat and put a book down once I've started it...thank god it's only 200 pages. I was supposed to strip the wallpaper off the spare room today. I genuinely wish I'd done that instead. I cleaned the rabbit out this afternoon, in between reading, and I have to say that Arnold (a chocolate coloured dwarf lop) had produced a great deal more of worth than the author has.

enough! At least this review has given me chance to vent steam and I must thank Amazon for this opportunity, like-minded readers can come here and find solace....perhaps we could hold support meetings and have annual competitions to find better and more inventive ways of saying the plain truth: this book sucks so hard that James Dyson must be green with envy.

A Gigantic Failure.

This tripe is a blog shoddily dressed up as a book. The Pixies wanted nothing to do with this project, wisely denying this guy so much as an interview. Undeterred, he decided to proceed with recycled information (most of which even the casual fan can pick up on their own through various Pixies websites) and a perplexing, unnecessary, and bad story ostensibly about some Pixies fan or other. I'll generously say that the author may have been trying a "Depeche Mode: 101" approach in which fans are chronicled alongside a band. Unfortunately, "Vicky's [Boring and Pointless] Story" comes off as something the author was working on before he shamefully cashed in on the Pixies reunion, and threw into the mix with a few Pixies references once he realized he had scarcely 100 pages on the actual band.

Notably missing is any useful information concerning the recent Pixies reunion. Painfully present are countless hack-critic discussions of the band's work.

Do not buy this book. Do not let someone give you this book. If you end up with a copy in your hands, do yourself a massive favor and immediately use it as kindling.

The writers were able to gain some exceptional insights from various individuals related one way or another to the House of Saud. It will be interesting for readers to get exposure to perspectives relatively unfiltered through Western media. Rather than the limited focus on Evil people making Evil speeches about the Evil things they are planning to do, this book shows more clearly than most other texts or news outlets how causality and history play a deeper, more complex part in these "terror campaigns" than the apparent bloodlust that our news organization fight to oversimplify, as well as the human frailties and personal idiosyncrasies that drive all sides in these "wars" - far more than the casual viewer or reader would ever imagine. Definitely worth a read!

Small and Hacker handle this challenging topic with remarkable care and arresting new research. Their monograph blazes with fresh and trenchant insights freighted with compelling evidence. Anyone looking to learn more about Al Qaeda in Saudi Arabia would be hard pressed to find a more thoroughly involved study. Paths of Blood deserves to be considered a flagship text in the field of militant Islam in Saudi Arabia. Our understanding of such conflicts would be greatly improved with more works like this one. Vibration concepts include a review of selected topics in mechanics; a description of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems in terms of equivalent mass, equivalent stiffness, and equivalent damping; a unified treatment of various forced response problems (base excitation and rotating balance); an introduction to systems thinking, highlighting the fact that SDOF analysis is a building block for multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) and continuous system analyses via modal analysis; and a simple introduction to finite element analysis to connect continuous system and MDOF analyses. There are more than 60 exercise problems, and a complete solutions manual. The use of MATLAB� software is emphasized.

About the Author
Alok Sinha is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU), University Park. He received his Ph.D degree in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. He has been a PSU faculty member since August 1983. His areas of teaching and research are vibration, control systems, jet engines, robotics, neural networks and nanotechnology. He is the author of Linear Systems: Optimal and Robust Control. He has served as a Visiting Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, Cambridge, MA and as a researcher at Pratt and Whitney, E. Hartford, CT. He has also been an associate editor of ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control. At present, he serves as Associate Editor of ASME Journal of Turbomachinery and AIAA Journal. Alok Sinha is a Fellow of ASME. He has received NASA certificate of recognition for significant contribution to Space Shuttle Microgravity Mission.

Not bad, but beware

Pretty good examples, however steps involving algebra etc are routinely skipped.

Be warned, despite the direct advertisement of a full solutions manual, the only way to get it is to make a Cambridge account, and get a professor to validate you so you can gain access to it online.

It is still a decent resource, just not as good as is advertised in the description and on the back cover.

Also, there seem to be a couple mistakes in the examples. When you see something wrong, such as masses that don't add up, go back through the example with a fine toothed comb yourself. Make sure to draw free body diagrams when you do this. I've just been drawing in the book with a mechanical pencil.

I recommend the Schaum's Outline as an extra resource. I am more than half way through my Mechanical Vibrations class and so far it has been a huge help, especially given the lack of a solutions manual.
