Best Book to feel the subject

Great book for astronomy and astrophysics. It is so complete that it has the density of a full course. If you read it you can get a good overall knowledge in astronomy and astrophysics. The book serves its scope greatly. Cosmology introduction is also great to start in the field.

Classic Text for the Astrophysicist.

I was looking for a popular text on Astronomy...this text isn't it. I have no desire to brush up on algebra, trig, or calculus. This classic tome is for the book shelf of a budding or working astrophysicist. I'm probably going to donate it to the library of my local community college. My copy shows the text was printed in 1982, long before the computer/visual age blossomed. The plates are beautiful but outdated due to the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope in the following decade. However, the strength of this book is the equations needed for a science major or graduate student interested in astrophysics. There are other more popular and fun texts for liberal arts majors interested in astronomy.

BEWARE!

This book only has about 214 pages as opposed to the 504 pages listed in the description. Moreover, this book is fundamentally a basic sewing guide with very little actual reference to industry techniques. It fails to demonstrate any legitimate difference in the construction techniques for various market levels and it fails to provide anything new that one couldn't find in any basic home sewing book.

Falsely advertised and over-priced; not advanced enough for an experienced sewer, and too expensive and underwhelming for a beginner.

HOLY Smokes - what an opening! I was offered and gifted a copy of this novella from the author. The synopsis looked interesting and HOT and I can promise you it lives up to it - if only initially through the prologue - the HOT part). Volume one gives nothing away, nothing past the prologue gives us a glimpse of the good Doctor and my interest were peaked.

Volume one merely sets up the life of our central character, Ramona "Roni" Gallo. The entire story is in first person so we get a strong sense of who she is - in both thoughts and dialogue. A musician and college student, she comes through as isolated and lonely, battling grief and trying to keep her head above water. By the end of volume one, we have a sense of what comes next (based entirely on the prologue, and where that falls in in the twelve volume series, there's no telling. I gotta think that a lot will unravel in her life and I know we'll get to know Roni much better. I'm not certain I'll like her. At this point, I feel sorry for her and, yes, based on the prologue, I want to see how we get there.

Good writing, great set up, and a character that I THINK I will learn to love - just a bit wary of the relationship status of the doctor (and how Roni justifies her actions in this) so that may kill it for me. Only one way to find out...

An intriguing start!

I didn't realize what a short prequel this was going to be but it ended on such a cliffhanger that I probably would have gone ahead and bought the second chapter, if only to find out exactly what Dr. Frost's backstory with Ramona is. I really enjoyed the beginning of the book; Ramona's inner monologue during the prologue is raw and blunt, almost an exact contrast to the reserved and emotionally reserved Ramona we are introduced to in the first chapter and I loved that. We know the beginning and we know where it ends up, but how they got there is the mystery and I liked that. There was a lot of character setup in this prequel, which I think is a good setup because with a lot of prequels there isn't much time to properly introduce all of the characters and give the reader a feel for who they are. I didn't learn quite as much about Ramona as I would have liked, but I know that in order for her to go from what she was in that first chapter to who she was in the very first scene of the book, something very drastic had to have taken place, and that's what I'm interested in finding out. I thought the writing flowed very well and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.

The first volume of this series deserves 5 STARS for its interesting characters, intriguing plotline, almost flawless storytelling, and promises of steaming hot scenes to come…

Ramona “Roni” Gallo is a 24-year-old music student who is in a desperate financial situation. Aside from her grandmother (who lives miles away) and best friend, she basically has no one to depend on—money matters or not. It doesn’t help that she has been worrying for an upcoming group performance or that she has been feeling ill for the past month and that being sick costs a lot. As if all these troubles aren’t worth worrying enough, her past she can’t deal with seems to resurface. Part of this past leaves her with the fear of falling in love. She used to have no difficulty with avoiding commitments and ignoring her attraction to the opposite sex. Then, there was a last minute change of physician…and then there was Doctor Dexter Frost…

"My greatest fear isn’t dying broke or starving to death or being alone for the rest of my life. Not even the thought of having maggots crawling out of my nose makes my system shut down like the thought of being deeply in love with someone."

I read this knowing that it is the first volume of a series and that it ends in a cliffhanger. I usually avoid reading books ending in cliffhangers unless I have secured the second book. I have made an exception with this one, obviously. Even If I am now dying with excitement to get a hold of that next volume, I can’t help but gush! This book will totally intrigue you and keep you so involved you wouldn’t want it to end!

That prologue is just awesome! Everyone is talking about Epic Epilogues (I include myself here) but what about Panty-melting Prologues??? The prologue is hot and all, but by the way that it was written, the author was clearly aiming to capture our interest and devour every page.

Short reads usually lack a well-paced story progression, which is vital in setting the mood of the narrative, and is linked with character development. I love that this one doesn’t sacrifice character development in order to stick with the intended length. I get to know a lot about Roni’s character by the end of this book. I decided early on in my reading that she’s definitely going to make it to my not-so-long list of favorite heroines. I still have questions about her, sure, but those questions just get me more and more curious, hooked, and intrigued. The characterization is just so powerful that even the secondary characters capture my interest. I crave to learn more about them in the coming books. My “literary instinct” rarely fails me so I believe this series is going to have endearing secondary characters as well. Although Doctor Frost’s character is only introduced by the last chapter, his literary presence is intense.

All in all, what makes this a great, short read is the good writing (how I love the word choice!) and characterization. If this first volume is just a taste of what’s yet to come, then I would definitely read the next volume!

"I look up to meet his eyes, and my breath catches in my throat as the iciest, coldest pair of eyes settle on mine. They’re beyond intimidating, and they seem to pierce through my very soul with their frosty, pale blue color. They give off this strangely intense vibe that I’ve never experienced before, and I can’t seem to look away from them. They’re alluring and enticing and frightening all at once. It’s almost like looking into the eyes of a beautiful serial killer. You know it will be the end of you, but can’t for the look of you look away."

I highly recommend this book to all the true-blooded New Adult lovers out there! As long as you can put up with a cliffhanger, this one’s for you.

AN HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF RAPE

Published in the midst of the second wave women's movement AGAINST OUR WILL remains an integral book in the feminist literary canon to the present day. Employing an historical analysis Brownmiller reveals in exquisite detail how some men have been subjugating some women since Biblical times. Her thesis of the use of rape during wartimes as an arsenal for the winning army is especially strong and admirable. This section alone deserves to be read by anyone interested in gender and women's studies as it clearly demonstrates how rape has been used to further antagonize and horrify the defeated population. The utilization of rape during the World Wars, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Serbia is certainly a difficult bit of knowledge to swallow. This book clearly demonstrates how rape has been used to keep some women on edge and weary of being both in public spaces and in their own homes.
Despite Brownmiller's important thesis I have several problems with AGAINST OUR WILL. Brownmiller has a tendency to over-emphasis her arguments with a deluge of statistics and case studies. It's almost as if she inserted every historical example she could find to further her arguments. Less is better in this instance. If she pared down her examples I believe her thesis wouldn't have been diluted in any such way. Another objection I have to AGAINST OUR WILL is her assertion of the following quote from her introduction, "Man's discovery that his genitalia could serve as a weapon to generate fear must rank as one of the most important discoveries of prehistoric times...[Rape] is nothing more or less than a conscious process of intimidation by which all men keep all women in a state of fear". My problem with this passage is two-fold. First, I think it is mundane and questionable to argue that man's discovery of rape ranks high next to the discovery of fire, etc. I also have clear problems with Brownmiller's assertion that *all* men contemplate rape to keep *all* women in a constant state of fear. It is clear that there are variations of fear and victimization in the general population. Brownmiller argued this every point later in her book when she discussed issues of class and race. To generalize this phenomenon to every man and woman is dangerous in itself. I consider myself to be a feminist but I strongly dispute some of Brownmiller's arguments.
Overall, AGAINST OUR WILL is an important book to read but please be careful not to consume all of the author's arguments at face value.

As relevant today as ever.

This book is as ground-breaking today as it was in 1975. Brownmiller systematically identifies and combats the many rape myths which have long kept both women and men in chains and in doing so, illustrates just exactly how much work anti-rape activists have ahead. By approaching the subject of rape in political terms, she challenges the reader to examine their own thoughts and experiences in a new light. This book is a daring and unapologetic appeal to people everywhere to rethink everything we ever thought we knew about sexual violence.

A solid four stars...

Ms. Brownmiller's groundbreaking work on rape may be a little dated, and some of her more esoteric points incorrect, but for the most part this is an excellent, well written book.
Others have gone into detail about the strengths of this book, but I want to particularly point out her highlighting of the Bangladesh invasion, and how Pakistan used rape as a cultural weapon. Since that time, the former Yugoslavian Republics, numerous central African nations, and many far east nations have adopted the same practice. Ms. Brownmiller explains why such an action is truly a human rights violation of the first order, and deserves more attention than what it gets.
Ms. Brownmiller's one failing, though, is her assertion that rape only exists among humans, and does not exist in any other realm of the animal kingdom. I believe she is incorrect, but that is a small point.
The strongest point in Against Our Will is when Ms. Brownmiller contrasts the film reviews regarding the numerous rape scenes from "A Clockwork Orange," with the reviewers' description of Ned Beatty's rape scene in "Deliverance." While film reviewers fell all over themselves about "fullfillment" and eroticism in "Clockwork," somehow nothing fulfilling nor erotic occured in Deliverance. Now that's a pretty clear double standard.
This book has been around a long time--but it still has something to say. Ms. Brownmiller is a good writer, and the book moves well. Most high schoolers should not have any trouble reading it--and I think most of them (boys & girls) should. It would serve as a wonderful starting point for discussion of contemporary sex roles.

From Richelle Mead: A Letter to Fans

A lot of people ask me if I’m sad that the Vampire Academy series ended. And honestly…I’m not. There are a couple reasons for this. One of the biggest is that I’ve always known how Rose’s story was going to wrap up, and it was time for her to get a little happiness. She’s had a rough time in the series!

The other reason I’m not sad about Vampire Academy ending is because…well, it hasn't.

Technically, Bloodlines is the first book in a new series (which is also called Bloodlines), but it picks up almost right after Last Sacrifice ended. Fans aren’t going to have to wait long to find out what’s going in the Moroi world--and that’s the key point here. We’re still in the Moroi world. Bloodlines takes place around all the Moroi, dhampirs, and other supernatural intrigue and romance we loved in the first six books. We even get to see how a lot of familiar characters are doing--including Rose and Dimitri.

The biggest difference is that Sydney, the Alchemist we first met in Blood Promise, has taken over as our narrator. She’s telling the story now--and with good reason. Things have gotten a bit crazy in the Moroi world, and Sydney finds herself dragged into the heart of it. Jill Mastrano, the young Moroi girl who learned about her royal status at the end of Last Sacrifice, is being targeted by assassins who want to remove her sister from the throne. To keep her safe, Jill is sent off into hiding--at a human school in Palm Springs, California.

To say this is a bit of culture shock for Jill is an understatement, but it’s just as difficult for Sydney. Sydney has to go undercover with Jill, posing as her sister, in order to make sure things run smoothly with a vampire hiding out in a human society. Eddie Castile, the well-intentioned dhampir always getting into trouble for Rose, also comes along to work as Jill’s bodyguard. Rounding out the cast is the notorious Adrian Ivashkov. He’s not posing as a student, but he has “helpfully” invited himself along to keep a brotherly eye on Jill--and torment Sydney with his constant jokes and party boy habits.

Rose was a great narrator, and Sydney’s fun in a lot of different ways. She gives us a human take on the Moroi world, which isn’t something we’ve really seen yet. Vampire life, through Rose’s eyes, is a very normal thing. For Sydney? Not so. It’s made worse because she’s been raised to believe vampires and dhampirs are wrong and unnatural, but spending time with them in Palm Springs begins to change her mind. The Alchemists don’t look favorably on those questioning their beliefs.

What’s also interesting is that Sydney has a much more analytic view of the world than Rose. Sydney overthinks where Rose rushes in, and both styles are fun to watch. Sydney’s super smart and can memorize reams of material—but is a little oblivious to how a normal social life works. That’s never been an issue while she was working as a field Alchemist, but in the midst of a high school—with guys who want to ask her out? Yeah. There are a few complications! Roll in the fact that sinister, supernatural activities are going on in Palm Springs, and Sydney suddenly finds her mission a lot more complicated than even she expected.

All in all, I think readers who loved the Vampire Academy series are going to adore Bloodlines. I purposely left a lot of questions at the end of Last Sacrifice…and those are going to get answered. And like I said, Vampire Academy hasn’t really ended. It’s just going to go on in a different form and give us a look at the vampire world in a new way. Fans of Sydney, Jill, Eddie, and especially Adrian are going to love learning more about them. So, have fun, and get ready for the story to continue!

Good for a beginner who has never had a dog but I want more - still looking

I don't really feel like I learned anything I haven't already learned. This book was very short and left me wanting more. Comprehensive for maybe someone who has never owned a dog and doesn't know what to do but again, I am still looking for more. I do appreciate the fact this book is exclusively about the breed and why some other tactics don't work as well as the rationale behind why/not. Going to keep looking and reviewing as I go! The best part is that I am a Prime Unlimited member and can continue to look without a big financial obligation!
