Beautiful book.

This is a beautiful book to really help you to focus on what is important during the Christmas season. There is a section for each day of Advent and each section includes the lectionary citations for that day, a reflection from Pope Francis, and a prayer from Pope Francis. The reflections come from several sources of Pope Francis' teachings including his daily homilies. I have read through a few of the first few days of this Advent book and the words of Pope Francis are full of hope and joy.

This book would be a perfect way for a family to celebrate this season together, by taking a few moments each day reading the words of Pope Francis and praying together. I know I will be using this book with my family throughout the Christmas season.

'The Joy of Advent' is a devotional based on writings

3.5 stars. 'The Joy of Advent' is a devotional based on writings, sermons, and prayers of Pope Francis. Straightforward and filled with Francis’s message of joy and of God’s love, it’s easy to follow though sometimes challenging to put into practice, making it a good choice for an Advent devotional – with a few caveats.

Each day begins with list of scripture readings for the day, followed by “A Word from Pope Francis” – essentially a sermon or homily drawn from Francis’s writings or addresses. However, because the selections weren’t all originally intended for or delivered during Advent, they may reflect the theme of the readings but don’t always address or comment on the readings directly. In “Taking the Word to Heart”, the author/compiler, Diane M. Houdek, looks at the readings and ties them to Francis’s words. “Bringing the Word to Life” suggests ways to apply whatever was discussed or learned in the first two sections to your own life. The day then closes with a prayer from Pope Francis (not written for this book) that relates to the day’s devotion, though not always perfectly.

It’s hard to review this sort of book without experiencing it as it is meant to be used, so although I received a review e-copy back in October, I decided to read it during Advent, daily. (Well, to be completely honest, I’ve missed a few days here and there and had to make them up — but I tried to make time each day!)

As with any devotional or daily prayer book, I found that some days’ reflections really resonated with me, while others were harder to connect to — and those may be the ones I need the most. Pope Francis’s message of God’s love for us and ours for God comes across very clearly, but I wish the reflections focused more specifically on the scripture readings. The drawback of the book’s “taken from Francis’s words” approach is that the connection between readings and reflection is not as close as it would be if Francis had set out to write a devotional himself. I would also appreciate having the text of the readings included within the book, instead of merely listed, so I could easily refer back to them.

Despite these reservations, many readers may find 'The Joy of Advent' helpful in stepping out of the bustle of holiday preparations and focusing on the the joy of the season.

SWIMMING MADE EASY? YOU MUST BE KIDDING!

Countless millions around the world would love to be able to swim better -- not fast necessarily -- just efficiently and comfortably. But, for virtually all, swimming well enough to enjoy all its benefits remains an elusive goal. Too bad, because swimming can be uniquely beneficial – a non-pounding, joint-friendly fitness activity that exercises the entire body and is suitable for everyone from toddlers to seniors. Being able to swim well is a truly valuable gift – and an essential life skill.

But here's the universal Catch 22: Humans are "hard-wired" to be inefficient in the water. Everything we do instinctively tends to result in clumsy flailing and exhaustion. Swimming really well requires expert instruction; the better the instruction, the more beneficial and satisfying your swimming experience. But traditional swimming instruction is almost universally ineffective, because it focuses on "Human Swimming" technique -- arm and leg churning, which just reinforces our inbred inefficiencies. As a result, "average" swimmers can only watch "good" swimmers with envy, assuming it takes "talent" -- or endless training -- to swim that well.

The message of Terry Laughlin's groundbreaking new book, Swimming Made Easy, is that swimming well is not a gift reserved for a talented few, but something attainable by everyone. This is the most hopeful message that lap, fitness or competitive swimmers or triathletes have ever heard. Until Laughlin's first book, Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster and Easier (1996), all previous books on swimming mainly recycled the same set of misleading and mistaken "rules" about what matters in swimming. They made the improvement process intimidating and confusing, and ultimately resulted in little progress. Laughlin's first book was an instant hit with readers because, as they reported, "It makes sense," and "This really works; I can feel a difference from the first lap."

Where previous books had mainly prescribed laps and more laps or presented swimming technique as something akin to rocket science, Laughlin advised human swimmers to think and swim more like fish. Fishlike Swimming, as he dubbed his method, focuses on avoiding struggle and turbulence by learning to be balanced and "slippery" and learning to swim fluently before trying to swim far or fast.

Since publication of the previous Total Immersion book, Laughlin and his associates have taught TI techniques to swimmers of all ages and abilities, from 4 years to 80-plus, from non-swimmers to Olympians and everyone in between. WHAT'S HOLDING YOU BACK? IT'S THE WATER, NOT YOUR FITNESS LEVEL. Lap-based approaches to swimming improvement are doomed to fail because, unless you're efficient to start with, more laps simply make your "struggling skills" more durable. If you can walk, run, or cycle a mile or more, you're fit enough to swim a similar distance. A lack of "swimming fitness" isn’t why you run out of gas. It’s the way your body interacts with water. Chapter 1 outlines five simple skills guaranteed to help you work with, not against, the water.

HOW YOU CAN SWIM LIKE AN OLYMPIAN. Your instincts tell you to swim faster by churning your arms faster, but the world’s best swimmers are faster because they travel MUCH farther with every stroke than you do, not because they move their arms faster. Chapter 2 explains why Stroke Length is so advantageous and exactly what you can do to get it.

NO MORE SINKING FEELING. Survival instincts make us want to stay on top of the water: As a result virtually every swimmer spends most of their energy trying not to sink. They think they’re pulling and kicking to move forward, but, in reality, their arms and legs are mainly occupied with fighting "that sinking feeling." But, the fact is, our bodies are supposed to sink.. Good balance and body position is the art of sinking in a horizontal position. Chapter 3 tells you how.

SWIM "TALLER," SWIM EASIER. Most swimmers believe that "stroke technique" means "how you push water back with your hands." Want to swim better? Tweak your armstroke. Want to swim faster? Put more muscle into it. But, hydro-dynamically, the most important thing you can do with your hands is use them to lengthen your bodyline. A longer bodyline reduces drag. Chapter 4 explains how to swim "taller."

DON'T FIGHT THE WATER, SLIP THROUGH IT. The gospel according to coaches says: "Swimming is hard." The price of speed is "more" and "harder." The gospel is wrong: The one non-negotiable, unavoidable, unyielding limiter of speed is resistance, not your capacity for work. No workout, wet or dry, can overcome the drag created when you try to bully your way through the water. But smart, strategic choices you make in how to "pierce" the water as you swim can reduce drag dramatically. Chapter 5 tells you exactly how to become more "slippery" and Chapters 7 and 8 explain how to generate effortless propulsion.

A STRONG KICK IS ESSENTIAL. Swimming instructors always start by having you kick and kick and kick some more. No wonder everyone thinks a powerful kick is the key to swimming well -- and then spends countless hours on kickboards vainly pursuing it. In fact, kickboard training does nothing for your swimming, and the best kick is the one requiring the least effort. Chapter 8 explains how to integrate an effortless kick seamlessly with fluent body motion.

These examples are drawn from just the first half the book. The second half offers a detailed plan, with progressive and sequential how-to steps, that will allow any individual to become their "own best swimming coach."

I have been a coach for several years and this book really hit home. I really enjoyed learning about the balance of our bodies in the water and how we can better maneuver ourselves thru the h2o. Highly recommend this book for any level of swimmer and/or coach. I will definitely use these techniques in practice for my swimmers and even with myself (masters swimmer).

About the Author

Luke Bencie has traveled to more than 100 countries over the past 15 years on behalf of the U.S. intelligence community, as well as for the private defense industry. While abroad, he has experienced, firsthand and sometimes painfully, the threat of espionage and the lengths to which foreign intelligence services and other hostile global competitors will go to steal American business secrets. Very interesting

Who knew being a businessman was so dangerous? Each page opened up new insights into the dangers of international business travel which, unless you have served as an intelligence collector in the CIA, you would have little idea how to thwart. The informal (and witty) language makes it a fun read, but it is very informative as well. Highly recommended for business travelers.

When traveling you have to stay alert. You may have been targeted without even knowing it. Learn to tell the signs. Read this book. Spies, thieves and stalkers can easily recruit staff working at cafes, hotels, airports, restaurants or buss-stations. You may be drugged at the cafe and then robbed in your hotel room. Some taxi drivers may be in on it too. Lots of freelancing con-men and surplus spies around. They often work in groups. Be aware, that in some places police officers, health care workers, military personnel, public servants, staff at pharmacies and even firemen may be helping the criminals. Recommended reading for all business travelers carrying sensitive business information or intellectual property. Government agencies have control over wireless networks in airports and big hotels whereas freelancing industrial spies and con-men may have hotel staff, taxi drivers or others on their payroll. Stalker-T.I's may find the book useful too since gang-stalkers play spies... According to the book industrial-espionage is a crime that goes almost unnoticed. The same is true of organized-stalking. Both are invisible crimes that the police or media rarely pick up on. By the way, the writer has some interesting advice on how to behave when being stalked by industrial spies or con-men: Don't ever try to out-smart them. If you do, they will make the rest of your business-trip a nightmare. (They become vindictive if the Target tries to reveal them). And - from then on - they will undermine your business-dealings in every way they possibly can. Pretend you don't know they are spying on you and take precautions. For instance, never leave your electronic devices or passport out of sight. This is a highly readable book with hands-on advice. (The writer is a former FBI industrial and economic espionage expert)

Solid Information

So interesting and easy to read that I couldn't stop reading, with concise descriptions and information of danger zones and things to not do when traveling in order to protect business data from espionage. The book is crammed full of good suggestions.

If you travel at all, you need this book even if you don't have any intellectual property to protect. It's got plenty of examples of situations and how to avoid them, such as preventing theft at airports, crossing borders with a laptop computer, hotel thefts, room bugging, along with relevant war stories in counter-intelligence. It will sensitize you to be on guard when encountering overly friendly strangers in foreign nations by describing signs that you are being "recruited", or a target. You will discover how amazingly easy it is to lose proprietary information and secret data by inattention to details.

This is one of those rare books that I make a core part of my business library, because it is that good.

Excellent guide for SOHOs

This book provides a quick and easy way for small offices to get started with Windows Server 2008. It is not a test prep or theoretical book - it's about installing and configuring a server for actual use. Anyone familiar with client versions of Windows (like XP or Vista) should be comfortable using this guide. It covers the basics of Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, IIS, VPN, Terminal Services, and much more, all from a practical, get-it-working standpoint. There are one or two passages that cover information far too basic for a guide like this, as on page 239 where web links are explained. I trust that most folks who are going to setup a server will understand what a link is. But don't let this throw you - 99% of the book is solid, useful information. I have read virtually all of the Windows Server 2008 books, and recommend this one strongly for new sysadmins on smaller networks.

Good Book for the cost

This book Was purchased in addition to the Windows Server 2008 R2 Unleashed by Guy Yardeni. This book was bought as the Setup guide but really It was used more of a Reference for where the other book was lacking. Between the two books Server 2008 R2 Enterprise setup was a breeze. DNS, VPN, Everything really.

The only thing missing in both books seems to be user account setup and management for Active Directory. Both books seem vague on the subject as if they didn't want to touch on it,

Over all this book was good for bit's and parts but If I had to choose this one or The one mentioned above I would go with the one mentioned above.
