Relevant and vital

I read this book about four years ago and frequently return to Professor Rubinstein and Firstenburg's excellent discourse on creating creativity within an organization. Their instruction on chaos versus order is worth the price of the book. Written in a no-nonsense and straight-forward fashion, this book will help open-minded leaders in any industry.
Highly recommended.

The Care and Feeding of Intellect

According to the authors, "To keep up with the complexity and uncertainty of an unconventional and largely unpredictable global business world, organizations must embrace a new metaphor that will transform an organization into a minding organization. The minding organization behaves like a living organism, in which adapting is central to vitality and control." Agreeing with Drucker that organizations must manage the implications and consequences of a future that has already occurred, the authors suggest a number of strategies which will "bring the future to the present and turn creative ideas into business solutions." Their book is organized as follows:
Chapter One: The Minding Organization
Chapter Two: Transforming the Organization into an Organism
Chapter Three: Adapting and Planning
Chapter Four: Structure, Creativity, and Error: The Foundations of the Minding Organization
Chapter Five: Chaos to Order to Chaos: Embracing Uncertainty
Chapter Six: Expanding the Imagination: Frames as Filters
Chapter Seven: Kniht [Think] Backward: Visit the Future in the Present
Chapter Eight: The New Leadership: Operating on the Edge of Chaos
Chapter Nine: The Minding Organization in Action
The authors provide a rigorous analysis of each component of a process by which to "bring the future to the present and turn creative ideas into business solutions." At the conclusion of Chapter Six, they suggest that the minding organization "creates chaos deliberately up front by starting with divergent concurrent perceptions and encourages errors to surface early when the costs of detection and correction are minimal." Immediately in the next chapter, they explain that the "frames" we create "filter the world for us, allowing us to manage the tremendous amount of information available." They then examine various "filters" which could prevent us from formulating the aforementioned "divergent concurrent perceptions." The sequence of the authors' ideas thus flows logically from one chapter to the next.
In the final chapter, the authors identify thirteen "precepts" of the minding organization. By now they have explained the interrelationships between (indeed the interdependence of) these precepts; they have also provided a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective plan by which to apply those precepts to the needs of any organization, regardless of its size or nature.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to read two books written by Peter Senge, The Fifth Discipline and The Dance of Change. Rubinstein, Firstenberg, and Senge no doubt agree with Derek Bok's observation, when criticized by parents of Harvard students after a tuition increase: "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." In the minding organization, education is alive and well...and given its relative cost, a bargain.

About the Author

Tokunbo Ogunfunmi is a professor in the department of electrical engineering and Director of the Signal Processing Research Lab. (SPRL) at Santa Clara University, California. His research interests include digital adaptive/nonlinear signal processing, speech and video signal processing, artificial neural networks and VLSI design. He has published two books and over 100 refereed journal and conference papers in these and related application areas. Dr. Ogunfunmi has been a consultant to industry and government and a visiting professor at Stanford University and The University of Texas. He is a Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a Member of Sigma Xi (the Scientific Research Society) , and Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He serves as the Chair of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Santa Clara Valley Chapter and as a member of several IEEE Technical Committees (TC). He is also a registered professional engineer.

Madihally (Sim) Narasimha is currently a Senior Director of Technology at Qualcomm Inc. Prior to joining Qualcomm, he was Vice President of Technology at Ample Communications, where he directed the development of Ethernet physical layer chips. Prior to that, he served in technology leadership roles at several Voice-over-IP (VoIP) startup companies including IP Unity, Realchip Communications, and Empowertel Networks. He also held senior management positions at Symmetricom and Granger Associates (a subsidiary of DSC Communications Corporation), where he was instrumental in bringing many DSP-based telecommunications products to market. Dr. Narasimha is also a Consulting Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, Stanford, CA, where he teaches telecommunications courses and performs research in related areas.He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Speech coding book review

Very good book for speech coding. I have taken the course from the author, and it is a very good book for people who are entering the field of speech coding. The author has enough basic materials in the first few chapters to go over the basics in DSP and random process. The later chapters on vector quantization is very useful and they cover the fundamentals to read enough research material in this field. I highly recommend this book for people doing research in speech coding area.

Important Message in a Compact Package

The author of "My Life With the Saints" (Loyola Press, 2006) explores the path to holiness in "Becoming Who You Are: Insights on the True Self from Thomas Merton and Other Saints." Fr. James Martin's life was profoundly changed by reading the writings of Thomas Merton, a 20th century Trappist monk who came to his own vocation via a rather circuitous route. In his book, "New Seeds of Contemplation," Merton wrote "For me to be a saint means to be myself. . . Therefore the problem of sanctity and salvation is in fact the problem of finding out who I am and discovering my true self." This brief book is an exploration of that idea.

Martin offers a short biography of Merton's life as well as an overview of his own life. Then he delves into the heart of the issue. We are all created for holiness, yet our particular brand of holiness is unique to each one of us. In the process of reaching for holiness, "one's own individuality, one's own brand of holiness is gradually revealed. Our personalities are not eradicated as much as they are made fuller, more real, and finally more holy."

Martin briefly touches on the unique brands of holiness illustrated in the lives of the first Apostles, Mother Teresa, Dorothy Day, St. Bernadette and St. Therese. He also offers a longer exploration of the life of Henri Nouwen, another major influence in the author's life. Perhaps the most interesting chapter of the book focuses on the life of Jesus Christ. He speculates on how Jesus came to realize who he was and how to live out his mission in the world.

In "Becoming Who You Are," Martin encourages all of us to embrace the way that God made us, the circumstances of our lives, and our unique path to holiness. While purists may object to Martin's use of the word "saints" to describe Merton and Nouwen who have not been formally recognized as such by the Church, one cannot argue with the dramatic effect that these men had on Martin's life. Martin embraces a broad understanding of sanctity, and in doing so, opens the door for us to appreciate the sanctity within each one of us. It is a much-needed message.

A Nice, Meditative, Pocket-Sized Martin Book!

I have yet to be disappointed with a book by James Martin. While much of this little paperback is reminiscent of the ideas floated in Martin's "My Life With The Saints" (perhaps his masterpiece work), a good number of his thoughts are expanded and buttressed with additional material.

The Length of this book, its size and its content makes this book perfect for segmented devotional reading. Providing much to meditate on, "Becoming Who You Are" is a great read for the subway commute or the quiet time in the morning/evening/before church.

The message of this book is key. Without becoming superfluous in an "I'm ok, you're ok, we're ok" manner, Martin challenges the reader to really search deep within her or himself to find God's grace in his or her life that will enable that person to become the saint they always have been and the God created each person to be. This is a very nice book. I await the publication of Martin's "Lourdes Journal."

Martin Fulfilling A Contractual Obligation To His Publisher?

I loved "My Life With The Saints" and as a subscriber, enjoy Martin's writing in America Magazine. I am also a devotee of Thomas Merton's writing, and have read a majority of Merton's rather voluminous body of work. So I approached this little book expecting great things, and was left disappointed. Among other things, a fair percentage of this thin book simply re-uses writing from Martin's very popular book, "My Life With The Saints." Further, Martin's stated objective - to shed more light on Thomas Merton's concept of the false self versus the true self - was not accomplished. Frankly, I was left with the impression that Martin was simply fulfilling an obligation to his publisher when he tendered this manuscript. It does not rise to his usual level of writing excellence. For those who really want to explore Merton's approach to the emergence of the true self, I would suggest they instead buy a copy of James Finley's "Thomas Merton's Palace of Nowhere." Written nearly thirty years ago, it is still in print and full of insights Finley gleaned from studying under Merton as a novice in Merton's monestery, and as a practicing psychotherapist. But skip this volume.

Very thorough, informative, accessible work about Guiana

Before I review this book, I should say that I am a student of French history who is particularly interested in the French colonization process in the Caribbean and South America. Consequently, the prison colony in Guiana has come to my attention.

After reading the book twice I've decided that I disagree with the other reviewers. No, this is not a sequel to or revision of the 1934 work about the Dreyfus affair, in response to another reviewer's question. Miles's work is a more all-encompassing one that includes information about the voyage from France to Guiana, the reasons why the convicts were sent there (among others) and the conditions within the colony. The work also explores the psychology of the French government and its motivations in attempting to keep the colony alive.

I think what turns off some readers is the fact that this book is not academic. Don't get me wrong, Miles's research is very thorough, and contrary to what the other reviewers have claimed, there is a very long bibliography in the back of the book where all his information can be found. Miles's language is far from sophisticated, and I did notice a couple of grammar errors, but who cares? The book gets across its message in a clear, accessible, ENTERTAINING manner, which a more academic, sophisticated work may not be able to as effectively. I have always enjoyed entertaining histories, and so do most people, considering the types of history books that sell en masse.

All things considered, I think it's only fair to give this book four stars. I was truly entertained by this book, and it did a great job of opening my eyes. Miles obviously put an enormous effort into it and I believe I succeeded. I also appreciate the photographs of the penal colony, prisoners, and other penal memorabilia. This book is easily worth the money, or at least a trip to the library.

Not a good effort

This book is a disappointment. It is not a serious work of scholorship. It has no notes, no index and is written in a rather breathless style that involves lots of exclamation marks and purported quotations of conversations that took place 75 years ago. The work also lacks structure and needed a good editor.

Inevitably, the other foodstuffs are devoured and the pickle allowed to continue its flight (why it's okay to eat, say, 17 toasted almonds but not a pickle remains a mystery). Shachat ( You Can't Catch Me ) contributes zany childlike art: the various snacks, personified with bulging eyes and short stubby legs, race across busy backgrounds. A hoot. Ages 4-8.

PreSchool-K-A pickle that doesn't want to be eaten tries to run away, and various other foods chase him. If your readers enjoy stories about food, this might interest them at first. The illustrations, however, will send them running. They're very poor imitations of Maira Kalman and Hendrik Drescher's styles, with none of the humor, care, or detail that characterize their respective works. The writing isn't involving or clever enough for a read-aloud, and the story lacks the development of similar tales such as Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's The Stinky Cheese Man (Viking, 1992) or even the traditional Gingerbread Boy. Ages 5-8. This might be the kind of comic nightmare to expect after reading "The Gingerbread Man" on a full stomach. The last pickle in the jar at Adolph's Deli does not want to be eaten. It escapes and dashes through city streets, pursued by an ever-growing posse of food items that cry, "Stop that pickle!" Then, colliding with a hungry little boy, the pickle faces his moment of destiny. Luckily, the boy eats the pickle's pursuers and, unlike his less fortunate Gingerbread cousin, the devilish dill is once again on the lam. The infectious refrain, deadpan humor ("Everyone knows that a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is not the fastest sandwich in the world, but it does have great endurance"), and outlandish paintings of anthropomorphized sandwiches, pretzels, and almonds will appeal to youngsters with a taste for the offbeat. We took this book out of the library about a year ago. My 3 and 5 year old girls loved it. Every time we return to the library we take it out again at my 3 year old's request. I have recommended this book to more parents and love to tell them the story line. We are buying it today to free up the library copy. STOP THAT PICKLE!

Go, Pickle, GO!

I got this book on the recommendation of a friend who's a children's librarian. At the time, my son was only a year old. It quickly - try, immediately! - became his favorite. I thought it was rather silly at first, but his response was quick and positive, and pretty soon, we all were laughing over the antics of the Pickle and his pursuers! "Stop Pickle Please" my baby requests on a daily basis. Bedtime is not complete without reading it, and now he even anticipates us - as soon as we turn to the page where the pickle escapes, he cries, "Go, Pickle, GO!" and then "Eeeek!" (like Ms. Elmira Deeds!) and laughs at his own joke. And a few weeks ago, he even looked up from his lunch of peanut butter and jelly and said to me, "Peanut butter has great endurance" in his little baby voice - (he's almost 2 years now). I nearly fell in the floor - I couldn't believe it! This book is terrific, absolutely terrific. The children really get into it, and my son has learned a lot of interesting words and phrases! I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone with small children.

My kids (all four of them) love this book. And I never minded reading it again and again. I originally found it several years ago on the sale table of a local bookstore and could never find it again. Happy to see it is available. It is a family favorite.

The Secret of Happiness--The Sermon on the Mount Revisited

The Secret of Happiness is a devotional exposition of the beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10) and a must-read for all Christians. Each chapter explains a beatitude, puts the beatitude in a spiritual context, and discusses why Christians should pay attention.
Graham's exposition is lucid and to the point. The book was first published in 1957 and it includes, at least in the first printing, a priceless portrat of Graham as a young man.
I have read this book twice. The first time was in college. I reading it again now in mid-career on the death of my grandfather. My grandfather loved this book enough that he donated a copy to the church library where it remained for 20 years. I receieved this book as an heirloom.

True Peace in All Circumstances

This is a spiritual guide to true inner happiness in any circumstance. In this day and age it's easy to become sad and have an empty, almost fearful feeling. Dr Graham, in this book, gives us all the tools and reminders we need of what is really imporant and that God offers to us an inner peace in all situations. This book is an excellent tool to regain the inner peace and happiness in all lifes situations. I highly recommend this book!

Fave short story!

I had to read this short novella again! I love this series so much! Nixon and Trace are so cute and fun! This story just makes me laugh! All of these characters are my favorites! Love Rachel's writing! She is awesome!

This is only about 30 pages and included in the back of Elicit. It helps resolve some issues that Nixon and Trace have with another character from Elicit. It was nice to have that string tied up and get some more from their perspective.
