A Paradigm and Perspective Changing Book (but only if you let it)

Whenever IDEO publishes a book or some other sort of media, it is important to take attention. IDEO is one of the companies spearheading the revolution to change traditional business models by focusing on human-centered design. IDEO has been around since 1991 but has been thinking this way since its inception and thus is way ahead of the curve. Their approach to human-centered design has shown multiple times to be one of the surefire ways to guarantee customer loyalty and longevity. In Creative Confidence David and Tom show ways for both consumer and creator to keep their humanity in an otherwise leviathan capitalistic system. The end result is a better product and a more enjoyable time creating the product.

The Kelley brothers start off the book offering you a dose of confidence right off the bat by saying "everyone is creative". Yes, fair enough, right? People designated as "creatives" don't have a monopoly on creativity and creativity isn't genetically inbred. It can be learned. Yes, some people will have a greater inclination towards creative thought processes and ideas than others but that does not defeat the fact that creativity can still be exercised and strengthened like a muscle.

The book gives a renewed sense of optimism to anyone wishing that they could come up with alternative solutions to problems rather than just copy/pasting from preexisting ideas. Most creative and innovative people fail quite a bit in their lives, its just that their mammoth successes tend to otherwise overshadow many months/years of frustration in the studio/lab.

Great book, I definitely recommend it to anyone wishing to approach their work in a new, more optimistic light and mindset. Refreshing and eye-opening book.

I’m sitting at gate F10 at the Saint Paul Minneapolis International airport en route to the Los Angeles International Airport. I just finished reading Creative Confidence, by David and Tom Kelly while on my last flight and figured, I should write a book review. The industrial designers out there are likely familiar with David and Tom Kelly, who are known for starting the near-legendary design firm IDEO as well as the Stanford D.School. David and Tom Kelly are brothers as well as respected authorities and advocates of design and innovation.

Creative Confidence is all about exposing the creative potential within all of us. It leaves behind conventional ideas like ‘only artists are creative’ and ‘creativity isn’t for corporate settings’. This book first establishes why and how we all have creativity within and then explains what can happen when that creativity is harnessed and utilized. The authors then explain how to tap into our creativity and share exercises to train our creative muscles.

This book is not written for or to designers, rather to anyone who is employed and wishes to solve meaningful problems with break-through discoveries as a result of creative confidence.

Amount of Content

At 256 pages, this book is neither short nor long. It’s a standard paperback book (roughly 8.5” tall and 5.5” wide). The book is broken into 8 chapters, each of which dives into either a different aspect of creative confidence or a different setting or implementation of creative confidence. There are a few illustrations and some artwork on new chapter pages, but the book is primarily all written copy. I scored it 5/10 because as mentioned before, it didn’t seem terribly full of information, but it certainly wasn’t sparse.

Value of Content

It’s hard to judge a book’s value without actually trying to implement all of the authors’ suggestions and measuring the outcomes. I will say that I perceive the value of this book to be pretty high. This is why I scored it a 7/10. This books is more about big ideas and concepts and the large impacts these ideas have on those who implement them. For example, there are many instances when talented but unfulfilled people found tremendous success and purpose after making drastic career changes thanks to their experiences with finding their creative confidence. There is evidence to support that when a creative and innovative, collaborative approach to problem-solving is set into motion, great things happen in businesses both large and small. David and Tom give plenty of examples in which this happened.

I believe the value to be there but it’s entirely based upon the situation of the individual and how he or she chooses to implement the ideas throughout this book. For those who are familiar with many concepts in this book, the anecdotes and examples are great reminders of what happens when we (designers) practice what we preach.

Originality of Content

Creative Confidence earns a 7/10 for originality. I haven’t read many books that highlight the importance of creative confidence. Furthermore, the success stories highlighted throughout are pretty monumental. To read about real-world results of what IDEO founders believe and teach is a unique piece of insight many designers hunger for. And to those not labeled as a creative professional, I think the ideas in Creative Confidence are big, yet simple enough to grasp to be impactful.

Relevance of Content

This book scores an 8/10 for relevance, specifically to a product designer. There were plenty of principals I was previously familiar with thanks to my formal industrial design education. Since I was fortunate enough to attend a very successful art and design college, I’d learned about the methods highlighted by David and Tom’s book. Since I’ve worked as a professional for the past 4 years since then, I’ve noticed how easy it is to shrug off the habits and skills learned in school while on the job. This book serves as a good reminder and brought me back to thinking about innovation and creativity on a rudimentary level.
Entertainment

Unfortunately, this is where Creative Confidence scored the lowest for me. A 6/10 isn’t bad. It’s not a ‘D’ like a 60% is in school. In this case, it means I felt neutral about it. I wasn’t terribly entertained, but I wasn’t bored with it either. The strongest part of the book was the introduction when David’s experience with cancer brought a sobering sense of clarity to the Kelly brothers’ mission and purpose, which in part, fueled the writing of this book.

Length of Read

Creative Confidence gets a 6/10 for length. The longer it takes me to read a book, the higher it scores in this category. This book is a pretty quick read. I did however put it down for a couple of weeks. I blame the break on it not being as entertaining as it could have been. However, when I did pick it back up, I read large chunks of it quite quickly. I estimate my total time reading this book to be around 6 or 7 hours maximum.

Inspiration

7/10 for inspiration. This is due to the concrete and simple stories supplied by the authors that prove the power of unleashing and harnessing creative confidence. It’s not an abstract phenomena that needs to be ‘willed into existence’, but a tool that’s both fun and challenging to use. I felt inspired to examine and write about numerous ideas as they struck me during my reading of Creative Confidence.

Final Thoughts

Creative Confidence isn’t for designers, but everyone who wants to learn to think differently and gain an edge over their old way of problem solving or their competition if they’re in a business setting. The authors are no-nonsense creatives who understand the psychology of collaboration and groups in a professional environment and make the benefits of having creative confidence clear. A student in any design discipline or young professional will likely feel inspired to challenge the status quo and workplace conventions after reading this book. Anyone in a managerial role will likely find a nugget or two of useful approaches to the challenges they regularly face.

Outstanding

When C.S. Lewis wrote "The Screwtape Letters" he wrote an extraordinary and literary account of Satan and his minions ordinary daily activity: temptation. Thus, temptation is with us all, every day. However, as the Bible and tradition teach us, occasionally, when the Lord allows them for the good of salvation, the Devil and Demons involve themselves in extraordinary activity. This activity includes, but is not limited to, Demonic Possession.

In this important book, which is even better than his first on Ignatius press, Fr. Amorth systematically outlines, defines, and explains this extraordinary demonic activity in an easy to read, yet scholarly way.

After reading this book, I was more convinced than ever that regular prayer and frequent reception of the sacraments (especially The Eucharist and Confession) are incredibly important. However, as other reviewers have noted, this book is not an effective "apology." If you do not believe in Satan, or evil, this book is not likely to convince you. For that I recommend starting with Lewis (Mere Christianity, Screwtape, etc.) and then moving on from there.

This book is highly recommended. For Christian warriors, knowing how the enemy works is a singular advantage.

Father Gabriele Amorth, one of Rome's primary exorcists, wrote this work as a continuation of his first, the best-selling book "An Exorcist Tells His Story." In this present work, he sheds further light upon points discussed in his previous book, while he gives concrete examples from his own experiences--and from other leading exorcists as well--in order to back up his points. "An Exorcist: More Stories," is an excellent, instructive, and helpful guide to understanding and overcoming the presence of evil in the world of today. It is recommend for everyone: it will compel skeptics to consider the possibility of demons looming in the air, and it will equip those who already believe in demons with all the essential knowledge needed to thwart evil.

I'm in the middle of this book, and I just wanted to say that it is a great sequel to AN EXORCIST TELLS HIS STORY. This book further explores demonic activity an the occult. It also provides examples from various case histories. Fr. Amorth spotlights a topic that gets little, if any, exposure in the Church today. If you're curious about what can be done to combat the devil, read this book, and its predecessor.

Perhaps the best chapter in this book is the explanation of "divine restoration" which, if practiced, will help more people than all the anti-depressant medication in the world. I salute Catherine Ponder as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, and may her work continue to help and inspire as many people as possible to experience abundance and fulfilment in their lives."

Great book!

You know that saying about " don't judge a book by its cover". Well, that goes for this book too. When I received the book it was shipped to me quickly and it just looked like a simple library book. BUT, when I began to read it, I was very impressed. So impressed that I decided to actually read it like a text book and I began to take notes. It helped me to examine my thoughts and intentions regarding prosperity and not just monetary prosperity. Yes, I would recommend this book, even in spite of many bible references. So, if that is an issue for you....here's my warning, lol. I have recommended it to several friends.

This is the most enlightening book on how to prosper I have ever read. The basic idea is that you are not trying to make God give you anything. You are only opening your mind to receive the abundance God has promised you from the beginning. Another intriguing aspect of this book is that the techniques can be used equally well to prosper others. Picturing a loved one's good, or affirming it through the spoken wsord, can have tremendous effects. Ponder teaches that there are 3 steps to prosperity: (a). Once you get definite about what you want, and write it down, the universe or God can be definite about what you want; (b). Create a picture of your goal as clearly as possible and look and enjoy it everyday. These images will be absorbed by your subconscious mind and begin to shape your reality; (c). Use prosperity affirmations often. Statements broadcast into the universe attract a certain reality, and in time are expressed as fact. Finally be prepare that flowers bloom when they are ready, and not before.

Great Book!

Following the principles of this book definitely opens your eyes to the possibilities that can occur in your life. I've found that saying affirmations, writing them down and doing the work definitely helps to get what you want. God wants us to live a prosperous life and reading this book affirms it. The author, Cathy Ponder, explains that we must be specific as to what we desire, as long as it is in the realm of God's principles. My favorite quote in the book is, "I cannot lose my good. I have not lost my good, though I may have outgrown certain phases of it. My good has simply changed form." That quote gives reassurance to the ones who may have thought they had lost what God had for their lives. This is a book of love and hope.

Whew! What a great read!

This is one of the most enticing romance novels I've ever read. The plot moves quickly, the story is exciting and the characters almost jump out of the pages because Wilde makes them seem so real.

Aside from the amazing plot, which other reviewers have done a fabulous job covering, I'd like to comment on the characters, especially Marietta and Derek. I love the fact that they're flawed and Wilde still makes us accept them and we want to see them succeed, in spite of the numerous mistakes they make along the way. So many times, especially in romance novels, you read about characters that are so simplistic, with love being the only driving force.

Wilde doesn't fall into that trap, and created characters so rich and complex, you're drawn in from the very beginning. I love how Derek is a dark, brooding work in progress who must come to terms with his own personal demons before he can become the man Marietta already loves. I admire Marietta for her intelligence and practicality, coupled with her enormous survival instinct and ability to love in spite of many hardships. These characters have such a wonderful, raw chemistry that really drives the plot.

The book does have a few faults, though, namely some of the dialogue, which seems a bit contrived at times. Also, the ending isn't 100% satisfying; it leaves you hanging, with only a few paragraphs devoted to the conclusion readers will have longed for since the first third of the novel.

I was thrilled to find out there are two other books to the series and can't wait to read them, although another Amazon reviewer gave away a key storyline for the second book in its review section. What a shame! But I'm still looking forward to reading more about Marietta's adventures, and grateful to have been exposed to this fantastic piece of literature.

The Master Key to a Compelling Brand. Personal or Otherwise.

Bob Burg introduced me to Bruce Turkel. I read Bruce's book in preparation for an interview on my podcast, In the Arena. I thought I had a decent, working understanding of branding--especially personal branding--until I read All About Them.

It is no secret that a self-orientation destroys trust. But it's difficult not talk about you, your product, your solution, and the results you produce when you market and sell. All About You will guide you in flipping your script to an other-oriented positioning that builds credibility, builds trust, and wins customers.

Do this. Buy the book. Go to page 238 and study the section titled Scaling the Pyramid to Success. Look at all your marketing material, and honestly assess where your messaging fits on this framework. Then let Bruce help you do better.

It Really Is ONLY "ALL ABOUT THEM!"

Bruce Turkel hits a grand slam out of the ballpark with this book as he methodically explains what is truly the most important aspect in marketing, branding and growing your business: It's simply "All About Them!" An excellent read with many illustrative examples throughout the book, teaching us invaluable lessons along the way of how to get your message out there, connect with your audience and create that culture and environment where your customers sell your product and service for you! The All About Them philosophy focuses less on the pragmatic function of your business (which as he explains is just the starting point of entry for your business) and instead, concentrate more on the emotional connection you have to your consumer. Bruce says "products sell not because of what they can do, but because of how they make consumers feel."

He shares with his readers his own personal experiences (both pitfalls and successes) and in each case, makes the point of how vital it is to create that unique experience for your customers that they cannot and will not get anywhere else! This is the key to winning customers and showing them that you are their only choice when it comes down to making the sale! His examples of Joe's Stone Crabs and Starbucks are perfect examples of two distinct businesses that offer experiences customers won't get anywhere else. Sure, there's a lot of seafood restaurants that sell stone crabs and coffee shops that sell coffee, but what sets these two businesses apart from their competitors is how they make their consumers feel about themselves. Joe's Stone Crabs makes its patrons feel that feeling of being at an exclusive restaurant where the ambience and service equally matches the incredible seafood they sell. Starbucks gives its customers that sense of community where they can hang out with friends, play checkers/chess, or conduct their business while enjoying their favorite latte or carmel macchiato. He further explains that what these companies sell is different than what their customers are buying. Think consumers' emotional connection they have to the products they buy.

I can't recommend All About Them enough to anyone who wants to grow their business!!!

I read business books because I feel like I have to in order to keep up with ...

I read business books because I feel like I have to in order to keep up with trends, not always because I want to. But Bruce Turkel uses such great stories that I actually found myself looking forward to turning the pages. The only biz books that have done that to me before were Tipping Point and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. We finally have another business thinker who writes beautifully. I was inspired to buy copies for all the account managers that work with me. Thank you Bruce!
