The author explains how to use various types of axes, hatchets, mauls, saws and wedges to take down trees and prepare firewood. Throughout recorded time, the ax has been a principle tool for carving out from the wilderness the homes, farms, and roads so necessary to the advance of civilization. Even today, those who use chainsaws and other power equipment still need to be familiar with the hand tools of their craft. In many situations, only a hand-ax will suffice for the felling of trees, the rough shaping of lumber, the creation of firewood, and clearing out the nooks and crannies of forested areas for other purposes -- including the planting of new trees. About the Author

Good read and a howto book. What more could you ask for?

There are three kinds of "howto" books. The basic 123 books. Great for a novice that wants more exposure to the subject or the weekend warrior that doesn't care. Then there are dry technical books that cover great detail, the kind you go to for reference to refresh your memory. Then there is the third kind which this book fits into. The learning experience, a book you can read from cover to cover and by the end you've learned something. Not really a turn to page # and reference this topic or look up this subject. But the way this is written, you come as close to gaining form the author's experience as you could from a written work. I'd really recommend this book if you have any interest in axes or crosscut saws or wood cutting in general. It's well written and a good read. The description of the hurricane of 38 for example, I really enjoyed.

This Book Covers It All Well

This fine book tells you in an easily understandable way everything you need to know about safely and efficiently selecting, felling, cutting, spitting, and storing firewood. It tells you which woods keep most easily for long-term storage, which are easy or difficult to split, how hot and for how long the woods burn. And it tells you a lot more that I didn't mention. The focus is on doing it all with axes.The author tells you how to select the right axe and how to maintain your axe. He also tells you enough about manual saws and chainsaws that I still highly recommend the book even if you don't ever plan to swing an axe or a maul, but plan to do it all with chainsaws and wood splitters. The book contains a few anecdotes related to its topic; they all make useful points.

Update of Keeping Warm With an Ax: A Woodcutter's Handbook

This is an revision of "Keeping Warm With an Ax: A Woodcutter's Handbook", from 1981.

It claims to be a revision, but I don't see much difference between the two. Whatever may have been added or deleted seems to be minimal from a comparison of random pages. Just be aware that it is a update so you don't end up buying both it and Keeping Warm With an Ax: A Woodcutter's Handbook like I did.

It is still one of the best books, if not the best, on selecting and using an axe that I have read among the limited number of books on the axe. Cook's emphasis on safety is well presented, with a concept of "frontal zone" as the area extending from one's feet forward at the width of the outsides of the feet, with objects to be cut to the left or right of this zone. Use of a frontal zone will mean that any swing that misses or ricochets will miss the user because it is already past the user. This is a concept that I had not seen before, yet makes much sense for safety.

I strongly recommend this book. In the very limited genre on axes, it is a gem well worth reading and studying. In fact, I have bought several copies to give to my axe-using friends and relatives.

I was fortunate to attend a seminar/class taught by Iris R. Firstenberg at the UCLA Anderson Executive Program last week. I just finished the book...wow. Professor Firstenberg is a remarkable speaker, thoughtful, intellectually engaging; she weaves inspiring stories that illustrate practical strategies for creative problem solving and innovative thinking. The book is an extension of her research, teaching and studies. Accesible full of important details, facts and insight. Worth the investment.

This is the smart choice in this category!

The 'smart question' to ask is "Why am I looking at these types of books?" If the answer is to improve your ability to get more out of your meetings, interviews, negotiations, and communications with everyone at any level (internal and external to your organization), this is the book to buy by far. I've read many self-help communications books and this one really gets to the heart of the matter -- ask and you shall receive; ask the right question(s) and you'll get what you want/deserve. It was an easy and enjoyable read that gets you engaged from the first chapter (unlike so many other books that take 5 chapters to explain what they're to accomplish). The quizzes really provide helpful and immediate feedback. You can read from cover to cover or use as a reference. Either way, this book gives you tools to use right away. You'll carry this one around with you until you've mastered the technique.
You won't be disappointed (as I have with so many other books of this kind). This one is a winner, hands down!

One of the BEST communication tools!

Dorothy Leeds skillfully addresses the problem that we all seem to have in communication---asking the right question. She takes you through asking yourself what it is you're trying to achieve, and then helps you think about how to formulate an effective "query" to receive your answer. She says (and I agree) that next to the effective use of silence, asking 'smart questions' is the second most powerful communication tool that there is. Anyone who wishes to communicate effectively and powerfully should own a copy of this book, keep it close by, and study its depth. HIGHLY recommended for those in the Health Sciences field.

Your First & Final Reference For Unbonded Post-Tensioned Buildings

I designed my first post-tensioned concrete building in 1965 and have been intimately involved with post-tensioned structures ever since. Never in all those years have I seen a document that has so clearly defined all aspects of the design and construction of post-tensioned buildings. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT!!
This book is a must have for every Engineer or Engineering student that has designed or is contemplating the design of a post-tensioned building.
Other reviewers have gone into depth describing the design elements covered. I would like to add that the many photos and the material covered in Chapters 1, 2, 13, 14 & 16 alone will justify the use of the book by any contractor, inspector or workman involved in the construction of any post-tensioned building. It will give them invaluable insights into why and how the building is to be built and why the details presented in a properly developed set of construction documents are necessary.

A Practioner's Opinion

This book is truly one of a kind. Over my 50+ year career as a Practicing Structural Engineer, I have had the opportunity to both use and review a large number of Reinforced Concrete texts. To the best of my knowledge there has never been a book written by practicing structural engineers for practicing structural engineers on the subject of how to design post-tensioned concrete structures. The authors of this book design post-tensioned buildings for a living and teach how to design them at a university level. I am just "blown away" by the discussions of mats, seismic diaphragms, restraint to shortening, construction issues and external post-tensioning. These discussions just don't exist anywhere else in the published world. This book is not only a text which should be used in teaching the design of prestressed concrete but should also be on the bookshelf of every practicing structural engineer who designs or considers designing a post-tensioned concrete building. The graphics and down to earth explanations make this book a truly unique resource for practicing structural engineers and those who are studying to become practicing structural engineers.

Nothing Like It

First a disclosure: one of the authors is my son. You would probably discover that from our last names. Nonetheless, as a specialist in the design and construction of post-tensioned concrete building structures for 50 years I feel qualified to submit a review. I will keep it as objective as I can :). This book is destined to become the definitive work on the design of post-tensioned concrete buildings for many decades to come. Written by structural engineers who design post-tensioned concrete buildings for a living and teach how to design them at the university level, there has simply never been anything like this book. It is an outstanding textbook with a crystal-clear presentation of indeterminate design and analysis fundamentals. But it is much more than a textbook. It is also an outstanding resource for the practicing structural engineer, with numerous design examples (including a chapter on seismic diaphragm design) and a chapter on the mitigation of restraint-to-shortening effects, a critical part of the design of any post-tensioned building but rarely addressed in writing. A highly unique and valuable chapter is presented on construction issues and structural observations, and finally chapters addressing two of the more exotic applications of post-tensioning, post-tensioned slabs-on-ground and externally applied post-tensioning for strengthening and repair. This book should be in every university classroom where prestressed concrete is taught, and it should be on the bookshelf of every structural engineering firm designing, or even thinking about designing, post-tensioned concrete buildings.

His reporting fundamentally reframes the event: Columbine, he writes, should be thought of as a failed bombing rather than a school shooting. Furthermore, much of the conventional wisdom about how to prevent such attacks—essentially, watch out for pimply outcasts with a grudge—is confounded by an investigation into Harris’s and Klebold’s actual lives. Most critics, with Janet Maslin a notable exception, thought that Cullen’s account helps us to better wring meaning from the tragedy. In sum, Columbine “is an excellent work of media criticism, showing how legends become truths through continual citation” (New York Times Book Review).

If you want straightforward, factual information on the murders at Columbine High School, this is the book you want to read. It presents the facts and debunks many of the myths, but it also explains where the myths and misconceptions originated from. A lot of reviewers of this book disliked the way Cullen told the story by going back and forth between the day of the killings and the events leading up to April 20, 1999, but I thought it was a unique way to present the information. A lot of books written about events such as this tend to lead with all the background information and it can cause the reader to get bored. By weaving the background within the story of the killings, it kept me engaged in the story. This book also tackled the Cassie Bernall/Valeen Schnurr mix-up in a way that clarifies what happened without degrading Cassie Bernall, her family or those who still consider Cassie Bernall a martyr. This book also devotes a lot of effort into understanding the thought processes of both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Many other accounts I've read simply label Harris as a psychopath and Klebold as a "follower" or "sidekick" This book has more insight on Harris and Klebold than any other account I've read. It also explores the law enforcement cover-up of their knowledge about Eric Harris's bomb experimentation and his history of violent threats. A must-read for anyone looking to know the truth about what happened and to understand what can be done to prevent these attacks in the future.

Incredibly thorough investigation of the Columbine High School massacre and factors surrounding it on all sides. Dave Cullen does a phenomenal job at deconstructing the inaccurate narrative that most of us still hold about the event, and provides a platform for the victims' stories to be heard as well. We need critical, thoughtful explorations like this book if we are to truly learn from horrific events like Columbine.

awesome book, GREAT condition. IMO, Everybody needs to read this. I am not even kidding. The issues that this book address's transcend the events (and immediate reactions) of columbine. This cleanly conveys examples of how the news media and other entities influence and control our opinions, and perceptions.

This book paints a brilliant retrospective picture of what actually happened, who the people involved really *were*, and dispels many rumors. It is safe to say that this book changed my outlook on many things. so i guess this inexpensive, impulsive purchase has changed my life.

It may seem a stretch to connect a volcanic eruption with civil and religious unrest in Indonesia today, but Simon Winchester makes a compelling case. Krakatoa tells the frightening tale of the biggest volcanic eruption in history using a blend of gentle geology and narrative history. Krakatoa erupted at a time when technologies like the telegraph were becoming commonplace and Asian trade routes were being expanded by northern European companies. This bustling colonial backdrop provides an effective canvas for the suspense leading up to August 27th, 1883, when the nearby island of Krakatoa would violently vaporize. Adult/High School-This expansive chronicle of a geologically unstable hot spot between the islands of Java and Sumatra, scene of the cataclysmic 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, conveys not only a wealth of scientific detail related to the event, but also addresses long-term ramifications for the social, political, economic, and religious fabric of the region. During the volcano's final 20 hours and 56 minutes, sounds from Krakatoa's eruption were heard 2968 miles away, and the air shock waves it created were recorded circling the globe seven times. Ultimately, the "six cubic miles of rock" that had been the island vanished. Winchester points out that Krakatoa was the first catastrophe to occur "after the establishment of a worldwide network of telegraph cables" that enabled news of the devastation to be transmitted with heretofore unheard of speed. Scientific investigations continue to this day, with particular watchfulness over Anak Krakatoa (literally, "son of Krakatoa"), an active volcanic island located in the same spot, which began forming in 1927-1930 and is growing in height at a rate of 20 feet per year. The author cuts a broad swath as he transitions among topics as diverse as plate tectonics, the 16th-century Dutch-colonial spice trade, and the seeds of radical Islamic fundamentalism in Indonesia, but the telling is masterful and conscientious readers are rewarded by his elucidation of complex interrelationships.

Excellent; revised and updated version would be even better.

I enjoyed reading it. However, there are some clear scientific errors in the figures and figure captions (e.g., location/name of some cities; offshore Vancouver is referred to as Northwestern Pacific, instead of northeastern; thickness of oceanic/continental crust).

I have been using this book as a textbook for my class (introductory scientific English class) at a Japanese university over the past three years, but I had to clarify these errors to students every time we encounter such an error while reading together. Before clarification, I ask students if they have spot any mistakes in the figure, caption, paragraph, and so on. Toward the end of the semester, students are getting better at spotting these errors (they are earth-science major, so the content itself is easy for them but translating/understanding long English sentences correctly are the major problem for Japanese students). We do not discuss grammatical errors or get deep into the controversial topics, though, where it is difficult for undergraduate students to judge the statement is scientifically correct or factual enough.

Among the scientific community, after the publication of this book, there have also been many changes regarding the scenario of how the eruption/explosion of Krakatoa and consequent pyroclastic flow/surge and tsunamis occurred in August 1883. It is even more dramatic than the book describes (even though the author appeared in BBC's (2006) documentary film `Krakatoa - the Last Days' with updated info, and some volcanologists believe that the tsunamis created by Krakatoa were so high that the seabed around Krakatoa was exposed to the atmosphere:

Others believe that the colorful sky in the painting "the Scream" by Edvard Munch (1893) reflects his observation of extraordinarily red and orange sky at sunset caused by the fine volcanic ash and aerosol brought to the air by the Krakatoa's 1883 eruption.

I do hope Simon Winchester will write and publish an updated version of Krakatoa with these new discoveries as well as citations of similar volcanic disasters with vivid graphic descriptions which the author is exquisite at.

Quite Good
By Old Enough to Know Better
The story of Krakatoa fascinates us over 130 after its eruption and does so for good reason. Volcanoes and earthquakes are potent reminders of how little influence we truly have in the face of the forces that govern our home planet. If a volcano decides to erupt, all any of us can do is to get the hell away as quickly as possible. Besides that, their effects are quite wide ranging. I was over 1,000 miles away from Mount St. Helens but it's ash pitted the finish of a new car I had bought scarcely two weeks before. Compared to Krakatoa, Mount St. Helens was a firecracker.

Winchester's book covers the history of the region, especially as a Dutch colony and gives a good working description of plate tectonics and the history of that discovery. As a technophile I found that quite interesting. Overall, the book is good, but I won't say perfect. At times it seemed to be a bit slow paced and there were a few times I wondered why the author had chosen to spend so much effort on points that probably needed little coverage. Overall, nonetheless, it was an interesting read

The Moments When the Mountains Moved!

Simon Winchester is the highly acclaimed writer of intriguing tales of scientific discovery, geology, biology, and history, well known for The Map That Changed the World, The Professor and The Madman, and The Fracture Zone. Here he tells us the generally forgotten story of the explosion of the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa in 1883, although in Winchester's typical fashion he ties it to pre-historic events, and gives us a full accounting of the impact on culture, government, colonialism, and religion.

I have read most of the Winchester books on forgotten events and people but this one may be the best. Winchester is a former foreign correspondent so he has been everywhere, even noticing first-hand that Krakatoa was more prominent in the 1990's than it had been on an earlier trip in the 1970's. It turns out the powerful forces which cause volcanic eruptions do not disappear but merely become less ominous and observable.

1883 was near the end of the Colonial era, although the Dutch managed to hold on until even after they were defeated in WWII. It was also the first time that the world had become one audience for broadcast news, due to the laying of transoceanic cables into remote areas. Everyone in the West grabbed newspapers to follow the incredible events in Indonesia. In fact the incredible events themselves were observable in most of the world. Many saw the impacts on tides, barometric pressure, atmospheric visibility, and even bodies washing up on shore.

Winchester's real skill in placing an event in context, and then telling us how it changed the world. By any measure, Krakatoa was the greatest volcanic eruption ever. The bad day at Mt. St. Helen's of my own youth (the week I graduated high school in 1980 so I only learned about it later) was a piker by comparison. Winchester is a trained geologist so the science is easily presented. He does a nice job with putting catastrophic events onto the colonial stage. His hypothesis is that the carnage and destruction led to the early demise of the Dutch governors and the rapid rise of Islam in the region. He makes the political case better than the religious and this is my only criticism. I wanted to learn more about the connection of Krakatoa to Islam but I will need to find another book as this subject is not covered in detail.

All in all a very entertaining book even for someone like me who does not really understand geology and has never been to Indonesia. As always Winchester writes with humor (the footnotes should be edited into a monologue for late night comedians), compassion, and typical British understatement. No aspect of the eruption is excluded, the final section on how it was turned into bad movies and highly inaccurate technical reports is a classic.
