Colin Brown is senior professor of Systematic Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He served as editor of The New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and is the author of several books, including Miracles and the Critical Mind, History and Faith, and Jesus in European Protestant Thought.

Why is this awful book still being sold?

Colin Brown, professor of systematic theology at an evangelical institution published this book in 1968 to give a survey of the history of philosophy and its effect on the Christian religion. The surveys starts with Thomas Aquinas, his main "enemy" and ends with Francis Schaeffer (a fundamentalist missionary / activist who is not a philosopher)...

Let me be direct: the book is full of awful errors. Misconceptions or ignorance stain every page. Just an example: while leading his main assault against Aquinas, Brown shows that he has not the least understanding of Aquinas, including the five ways, and in particular of the cosmological argument. He thinks that the argument fails because it would require the first cause to be also caused... so he is unaware of the distinction between contingent and necessary beings... Who would not be ashamed of writing such a book?

In addition to the ignorance of the subject-matter, Brown takes party, moralizes, praises or condemns. Taking the same philosopher again, Aquinas is failure because his various arguments could lead to several gods (hasn't Brown heard of Ockham's razor?) or because his God is not necessarily identical tp the God of the Hebrew patriarchs (so what?)....

No need to display more of this and put more shame on Brown. In the preface to a more recent book, Christianity and Western Thought, vol. 1 (IVP, 1990), which should have been a revision of the present book, Brown honestly admits : "Twenty years ago I wrote a book entitled Philosophy and the Christian Faith (...) I feel a growing kinship with Saint Augustine who towards the end of his career wrote his Retractations. (...) I have never heard of (...) If I had paid more attention to the texts of (...) I might have known better. But I did not. My ignorance (...) I have made countless changes in my exposition and assessment of numerous thinkers and movements. (...) I have also changed my perspectives. (...) limitations (...) limited perspective and failure to see (...). shortsightedness..." Indeed Brown has in these years learned some basics of philosophy, the number of errors and misconceptions in Christianity and Western Thought is not appealing as in the present book, it may be acceptable although I would not recommend it, but rather Copleston's nine volumes History of Philosophy, or for those who want a short history, Ralph McInerny's A History of Western Philosophy.

A first question comes. How could someone write a book on something he knows almost nothing about? The answer is to be found in the inclusion of two fundamentalist, fideist thinkers at the end of the book, Van Til and Francis Schaeffer. The later wrote some extremely radical and arrogant booklets (e.g. Escape from Reason) on the history of Western ideas, while he knew absolutely nothing of the subject. Inspired by the example of Schaeffer, Brown thought he could write such a book without knowing philosophy, naively holding Schaeffer's totally wrong ideas for revealed truths. The results shows. Even if Brown at the end of the other book (Christianity...) explains that he rejects foundationalism (foundationalism = accepting basics such as logic, common sense, evidence as foundations for thinking), following Wolterstorff's Reason within the Bounds of Religion (1976), he has luckily departed from Schaeffer's nonsense. This is possibly due to the good influence of L. Rush Bush (Southern Baptist Theol. Sem, mentioned as a great help in the preface), whose humble books dealing with philosophy and the history of ideas display a knowledgeable and sound approach.

My second question is more disturbing. Why couldn't the publishers of the present book (Tyndale, then IVP) see through its blatant, shameful weakness? Why would they naively think it so good to the point of asking for a second edition? And Brown, who does not hide that he knows how horribly wrong this present book is (see Christianity and Western Thought), seems happy about the dozen of printings this book has undergone, not to speak of the numerous translations. When a manufacturer produces a product with a defect, he recalls it. Why can't IVP or Brown, whom I would expect to be servants of Truth, stop selling this book?

Beautifully Conceived Survey

This survey by Prof. Brown is a beautifully conceived book that is a tour de force of commitment and scholarship. It is especially strong in its treatment of natural theology, although I don't consider his dismissal of the ontological argument for the existence of God to be the last word. He brilliantly covers the writings of Von Til, Shaeffer, and Barth as well. His criticisms of Robinson's Honest To God is powerful and helpful to students of modern theological trends. In his criticism of "situation ethics" I was reminded of my time spent at Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Massachusetts. Situation ethics was popular among many students and teachers there. For example, a number of the ministerial candidates had their girlfriends sleeping over in their dorm rooms. You see, fornication is wrong in the Holy Bible, but on the other hand [sic] Jesus calls us to "love our neighbor as ourselves." Hence, if the fornication is mitigated by love in the right amount and in the right way, that "situation" might allow one to go ahead and shack up with a clear conscience. So, it was both pleasant and useful to be reminded of that wicked Mr. Robinson and his wicked book, although Prof. Brown, more tactful than this reviewer, does not called Mr. Robinson "wicked." The reader should have a knowledge of philosophy and theology before reading this "introduction." If one is not already familiar with the terminology, it will be tough sledding. However, for those of us already familiar with many of the names and terms, it's a refreshing read from front cover to back. Thanks Prof. Brown!

Concise Christian view of Philosophy

I utilized this in seminary and found it very useful. Brown's review of the history of philosophy and critiques thereof are not overly authoritative. This book is an easy read for the non-philosopher or novice. It was broad in its reach but it could not plunge deep enough due to its format. If you are looking for a quick trustworthy reference from a Christian perspective, this is a must.

Dr. Brown covers many of the important philosophers in history. Brown even provides short coverage of Van Til and Schaeffer (quotes Van Til: "The existence of the God of Christian theism is presupposed by all rational thought and behavior"). This is a good book for a beginner or a seminary student.

Presuppositions are important and Brown reminds readers that "Calvin compared scripture with spectacles which put things into focus."

Chapters include:

- 19th century philosophy
- 20th century philosophy
- Christianity and philosophy

Brown offers fine definitions such as: "Rationalism has come to mean the attempt to judge everything in the light of reason."

Will she be able to pick up the pieces and make the hardest decision of her young life? There’s only two choices in sight. Either grow up way faster than planned or give up this precious gift inside of her.

Not Bad For a Debut

SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT!!!!!

I purchased this book for two reasons: 1) it was in my 'Your Recommendations' queue and 2) the price.

I enjoyed the book and am glad the author stepped out on faith to pursue her dream of writing and publishing a book.

Here's a brief summary of my thoughts in pro/con format:

PROS

1. Good story premise
2. Likeable lead characters
3. Interesting internal conflicts for each lead character
4. Story evolves at a good pace that makes the reader want to read Part II
5. Author tackles serious topics (suicide, teen pregnancy, rape, HIV, infidelity, loss of parents) and their consequences in a respectful manner

CONS

1. Better editing is needed
2. Plot is a bit predictable (Who doesn't know who Link's friend Cee is? And, Paris will be pregnant in Part II because of what happened in the club)
3. Relationship between Link and Porsche happened too quickly
4. Male characters need to be fleshed out more
5. Book is too short *

* Why are so many authors jumping on the serial/sequel bandwagon? What happened to writing a good solid book (300-350 pgs) instead of breaking it up into parts? This is a personal pet peeve. I know others may feel differently.

Chasing Love and Rainbows is the authors first time out the gate, and she does not disappoint. Three sisters try to make a go of life after the murder-suicide of their parents.Porsche, Patrice and Paris are as different as night and day. Paris the oldest has experienced the pressures of being left behind to raise her two younger sisters. She has been forced into the role of mother delaying the dreams she has for her own life. But what happens when she realizes her hopes, dreams and plans are quickly going down the drain?
Porsche/aka Black has made a name for herself on the strip-club scene, even gaining an admirer,who goes to expensive lengths just to get her alone. But Porsche has a mighty big secret that has just came home to roost. Patrice the baby of the bunch is madly in love with her college schooled boyfriend. What happens when one isolated incident threatens the bond these sisters share? You'll have to read it to find out. Great job for this authors first time out. I look forward to reading more of her work.

Whoa!

Lemme start with this disclaimer: Chasing Love and Rainbows is the first book of its genre that I've ever read, so feel free to stop reading right now, because it's possible I don't know what the heck I'm talking about. But, should you decide to read on, here goes . . .

First of all, some people have innate storytelling ability, and TT Dorsett is clearly one of those people. She's clearly thought about these characters well beyond what she put on the page and I got the sense of their being full, three-dimensional human beings. I could tell that they lived in her brain, perhaps for a very long time, before she ever wrote a single word and that's always the beginning of really rich, layered writing in my opinion. The story centers around three sisters, Paris (the eldest, nurturer), Porsche (middle child, a bundle of unresolved issues with men and other stuff that I won't mention in case I ruin it for you) and Patrice (youngest, overachiever in a sticky situation that could threaten her promising future).

Each character is written in the first person and their voices are strong and strident and powerful, but man, the subject matter and their circumstances were so grim. The book opens with a bang (literally and figuratively)and it doesn't let up from there - my impression was of three young women trying to make a future for themselves out of a tragic and chaotic past, but making decisions that are in many ways destined to make their futures just as tragic and chaotic. There were parts where I was a little lost because the sisters all began to sound exactly the same to me and without the cue at the beginning of the chapter, or the mention of the man in their life, the voice could just as easily have been any one of them. But that happened only intermittently, and I was largely able to get a clear sense of the differences between the three.

And finally, don't be fooled by the title and all this talk about 'rainbows' and 'love'. This is not a fairy-tale. This is raunchy, gritty, raw, unflinching stuff and while I can't say I was left with the warm and fuzzies after reading it, I certainly admire that this author seemed not to have held anything back. She just bled every emotion onto the page - anger, pain, lust, loss - it's all there. There's always something to be said for writing that makes you feel something, even if not all of those emotions are pleasant, and for that reason, I'm giving this book 4 stars. All throughout, I was like, "Damn, she went there . . ." It'll take me awhile to recover.

Manchester United had won the title in 1993 and 1994 but by August 1995 fans were calling for manager Alex Ferguson's resignation following the sales of Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Andrei Kanchelskis. A defeat at Aston Villa in their first league game of the season prompted Alan Hansen to utter the immortal phrase “You can't win anything with kids” and he wasn't the only one to dismiss Ferguson's men.
With Eric Cantona still suspended following his attack on a Crystal Palace fan earlier in the year and Newcastle storming into a 10 point lead, United's young team looked anything but champions. Yet by season's end Hansen was left looking shame-faced.

an awesome book for your money

I only knew certain aspects of this industry before reading up on it. This is actually my first "For Dummies" book. I'd never buy a "For Dummies" book in my life, I used to say...but after reading some free pages online, I had to get it. It doesn't cover "everything" but it covers enough overall stuff to keep you from being "in the dark" about what's going on.

This is very informative. It was an easy read, but it isn't something that I would have read if it wasn't for a class. It was full of useful maps and graphs. It is a very clear and straightforward book.

A concise look at Rome's History

Marcel Le Glay et al's History of Rome was the first History book on Rome I read. The book was relatively well written, and took an interesting look on Rome's decline. Unfortunately, it focused largely on the Leaders and the royal/imperial families of Rome; the book tended to focus more on their lives then on the Roman Empire's history itself. The section on Augustus was thorough and very interesting. The middle and end of the book were especially good, but the beginning lacked detail. There is an absence of information on this part of Rome's history, and the book tended to breifly talk about important events during those 500 years. The book's examination on the culture of the Roman Empire I find is much too succinct. For its brevity it was excellent; it is admirable that one can write such a tasteful book in such small space. If one wants a helpful guide to the entire history of Rome pick up this book.

Never again

I ordered this book for my undergraduate Roman history class before I realized what a piece of crap it was. Get Michael Grant's book instead, or Cary and Scullard's, old as it is. Anything else: I spend valuable time in class and outside it propping up this book because of its many defects. The text consists of a mishmash of poorly-organized subheadings, randomly-inserted series of bullet points and "feature" boxes. There is no sense of the big picture, which is so important for undergraduates, and no way of assessing which material is more important, and which is trivial (and there's a lot of trivial material in here.) One of my colleagues calls it "dog barf": a mix of subjects with no organization or overarching analysis. The writing is filled with phrases in quotation marks that have no sources cited -- exactly what I tell my students NOT to do in their papers. The translated French sentences with their long series of subclauses and odd syntax are difficult reading. The images are if possible even worse. The text refers to objects like the warrior of Capestrano as if everyone were expected to know what it was (why would they be taking Roman history if they did?) which are not illustrated. There is no map which shows where Dacia, Pannonia, or Germania are, all regions which are hugely important in understanding the empire. The periodically inserted plans of Rome (whose references reveal they are essentially xeroxed from other people's books) mark the outlined buildings with numbers, but nowhere is there a KEY. I can't believe the editors passed this thing twice. I'm going to scrutinize offerings from Blackwell much more carefully from now on.

Sweet and enjoyable romance set in the backdrop of Paris

When Jason Greene finds his fianc�e in bed with another man, he takes a leave of absence from his law firm and rushes off to Paris. He hopes the time away will help him get past the anger and hurt so he can figure out what to do next. He's helped along the way when he meets Jules, a violinist with some of his own issues, and the two become fast friends. But Jules takes Jason on something more than a musical journey as the two of them learn more about themselves and each other than they ever would have expected.

This was a sweet story, an easy read, and an enjoyable book. The characters are fun and their interactions make it easy to connect and like them. There are a couple of parts that seem to move just a bit more slowly than needed, but it wasn't so much that it dragged or got in the way of the overall story. Definitely worth a read!

This series will blow you away, book one is wonderful and just to let you know, so is every book that follows! These books can be read as stand alone's, or in any order, so read them how you like, as long as you read them! Jason and Jules are both lovely, hurting men who find each other while Jason was running from his problems. Life can get in the way sometimes, but the beautiful thing about this story is that sometimes when we run from the life we left behind, we are actually running to the life we were meant to live in the first place! Don't miss Blue Notes, it sets the tone for a series that is sure to please!

Just Not For Me

It is obvious that I am in the minority with my opinion of this book. I wanted to like it. I love music. I love the violin. I love romantic books set in Paris. I did not love this book. I didn't connect with Jules at all. I liked Jason, but not enough to keep reading. I did like the flashback chapter with Robbie. Unfortunately, I started rooting for him to make some kind of an appearence and sweep Jason off his feet, which of course was never going to happen. This book was not my cup of tea, but the writing was solid, the sexy scenes were hot, and it was well edited. I think the majority of readers will like, it just wasn't my thing.

About the Author
Julia Golding’s debut novel, The Diamond of Drury Lane, won the Nestl� Children’s Book Prize and the Ottakar’s Children’s Book Prize in the U.K. She lives in Oxford, England. While working as a diplomat in Poland, Julia Golding traveled high and low, from the Tatra Mountains to the bottom of a Silesian coal mine. She later joined Oxfam as a lobbyist on conflict issues, campaigning at the United Nations and with governments to lessen the impact of war on civilians living in war zones.

Wow - exciting book

I am a parent, presumably reading this series to preview it for my kids. But I am enjoying it so much. I found this book to be even more exciting than the first. It is the continuation of Connie's life as she learns to deal with being a universal. She learns that along with special gifts comes great responsibility. I love the action in this book as well as the messages. It has a wonderful environmental message, without coming off as too preachy. The book delivers messages about taking care of your friends, taking responsibility for your own actions, environmental awareness, and accepting people for who they are. Although it is a kids book, I enjoyed it enough to run out and grab the next one.

An Excellent Choice For Young Readers ... And Their Parents ...

Julia Golding continues The Companion Quartet with its second volume "The Gorgon's Gaze." The novel's young protagonist, Connie Lionheart, is still learning to deal with her role as a "universal." Targeted toward readers age 10 and older, "The Gorgons Gaze" is intelligently written - it does not talk down to younger readers and is not so simplistic that it will bore older readers.

"The Gorgons Gaze" does contain a strong environmental message, but it is not preachy or bombastic in conveying that information. Readers and parents who enjoy books with a message will find this novel quite a treat.

Julia Golding does a nice job of bringing necessary information from the first volume of The Companion's Quartet into "The Gorgons Gaze". While it is helpful to have read the first book in this series, it is not absolutely necessary to have done so. Language and situations contained in "The Gorgons Gaze" are appropriate for all ages.

One of the best stories that children will also love

This is a near-perfect book for parents and kids. We all enjoyed it in my house. It's fun and light yet gripping with mystery and intrigue. It makes the reader want to continue and continue and nothing else matters, completely captivating us and taking us out of the daily grind.
