Premiere text not aging gracefully

As a security professional and attorney with more than 30 years of experience, I have used this text in my graduate courses on security case law and security management for more than eight years with more than 400 students at two universities. The clarity of the author's text and the case-based format makes it an ideal text.
However, without a recent update or new edition, the example cases are now sadly out of date. In addition, newer topics in the area of cyber-security and updated laws on the regulation and powers of private security personnel are not addressed in the text.
Use of this text now requires considerable work by the professor to bring in new materials and update nearly twenty years of case law decisions. In fairness to the author, however, I am not aware of any text on this topic that is more useful -- even in today's classrooms.

Wonderful Book in the Forest Mims Tradition

I'm an EE and a lot of us older folks learned circuits and electronics reading and studying the awesome hand-drawn diagrams of Forest Mims. Here's an example of one of his best: The Forrest Mims Circuit Scrapbook, Vol 1. Search Forest Mims for many of his others.

I've tested nearly all of the circuits in this fine little book, and Sarah has done an outstanding job of double checking functionality, so you don't burn your workshop down. To be brutally honest, even some of Forest's had little resistor or power supply errors, so not many of these are as carefully vetted at this one. Back in the day these used to be copied from component manufacturer spec sheets, which sometimes were rushed to press, and some errors have continued for decades.

Allen is a wonderful teacher, and I've read and reviewed most all her titles, and require them for our online tutorials. Her pedagogy is to teach, give a problem you can try, then show you the solution. She is frankly a perfectionist and loves her readers, and when we pointed out a graphic on another review that was a little difficult to read on Kindle, she corrected it instantly, on ALL her ebooks!

If you're getting into Ohms law, circuit basics, etc. this is a wonderful place to start, whether for class or as a hobbyist. Sarah's value add is to give little "intuitive" examples with a wonderful array of diagrams so you "get" a concept in ways other than just the math. Her explanation of little diagrams showing position vs. momentum, for example, casually shows how this underlies all differential and integral calculus, and although fine for a High School audience, the point illustrates aspects of QED and Heisenberg uncertainty (the inability to resolve position and momentum simultaneously, or any conjugate Fourier for that matter-- time/frequency, sound, MRI images, etc.) in a way much more intuitive than taught in physics classes.

Highly recommended, for the price, I'm getting my grandkids her whole series for school! You can find them all on her author's page.

I have a limited background in electrical work and old electronics and I am reading this Kindle book to help me in my study and review of the subject matter and it is very good in getting the information about circuits to the reader. I gave it 4 stars to start and I will return when I am through the book and can elaborate more. So far, the explanations do help me and a person reading this book will be lead through many descriptions of the circuits given and they are described and explained very well. It helps for me to have been exposed to working circuits in the past in electronics classes and some limited theory in an electronics engineering basic course or two in college, but there is still some explanation I will need on a few of the concepts of potential energy reviews as I am in need of more study here. To this old novice, the explanations don't always come off the pages as well as I would like, but I've found that is me and with some more study of it, it will eventually come. I like this book, for most of it's delivery and detail and I do recommend this Kindle book to someone who is studying topic of electrical engineering as this is a very well written book about circuits. Its descriptions of circuits and components, gives the reader a good amount of knowledge about electric circuits and it also delivers a little information concerning the generation of power and electricity. I like this book a lot and recommend it for one who is interested in circuit explanation, of which each builds knowledge you take with you to the next circuit you will study.

About the Author
Michael J. Quinn is the author of the first five editions of Ethics for the Information Age. He is Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at Seattle University. He did his graduate work at University of Wisconsin - Madison and received his PhD at Washington State University. Previously, he was a professor of computer science at Oregon State University where he taught Social and Ethical Issues in Computer Science among other computer science courses.

Avoid the Kindle version if you want to read anywhere but your computer

The Kindle version of this book will only allow you to read it on "Kindle for PC." It won't let you read it on an actual Kindle or an Android device. I assume that is because it is a "print replica." Come on Pearson and Amazon! How many people sit down on their laptop or PC to read books? I feel totally ripped. Give me a book that is actually usable on my devices . . . that is why I buy digital ebooks!

Let's talk about the ethics of making minimal edits to sell a new edition! Another textbook racket!

Bought 5th edition in July. In August the school changed requirement to 6th edition. Haven't read either edition yet, but it appears that page numbering tbtrfg has changed by only about 5 pages.

Actually, it's not "OK" (the 3-star designation); would prefer not to leave a star rating yet, but Amazon requires it.

Actually Impressed

As a Computer Science student, I was actually impressed by this book. Admittedly, my expectations were low, but Dr. Quinn did a relatively good job of covering both the ethical and technical aspects of a variety of relevant topics.

The discussions of various ethical theories did a good job of relating the theories to relevant technical topics, but wasn't as skeptical as I would have liked. Arguments in favor of and against each theory are listed, but some obviously nonsensical points are given a free pass. A critical reader should have no trouble discerning these however, so they don't really detract from the book in my mind.

Most of the rest of the book is dedicated to a discussion of various ethical dilemas related to technology, and this portion of the book was really excellent. Dr. Quinn did a great job of selecting relevant historical situations and presenting them in a way that is both comprehensible and correct - a rare thing in texts of this sort.

Really the main thing that I felt detracted from this book was the illustrations. As others have noted, they are excessive and almost exclusively worthless. They're easy enough to ignore, but there are so many of them that I'm sure they added to the (slightly higher than I would expect) price. For this reason alone I'm deducting a single "star".

Great book. If you still play West End Games Star Wars, also know as D6 Star Wars, this is a fantastic book. This book includes all the Force powers a Jedi, or Sith could want. If you don't have this book, get it. This should be one of your top three WEG Star Wars books, after the rule book, in your collection. (The other two being Pirates & Privateers and Gundark's Fantastic Technologies)

Well this one is the clearing house for the force. It has all the powers in one book FINALLY! Has some fun info about running a RPG in the Old Republic era. Or as happens in my game, stuff from the past shows up in the present. My only problem is they never came out with the second supplement with the characters when they were powerful.

My son absolutely loves this book, the illustrations are gorgeous and it is written like a long beautiful poem. The rhythm lulls my son to sleep.
"I am the Heartland,
Shaped and lined
By rivers, great and small, that wind
Past farms, whose barns and silos stand
Like treasures in my fertile land."
My son is fascinated by tractors and anything that has to do with farms so this book has definately been a hit with him.

In her latest vehement treatise, Swiss psychoanalyst Miller (The Drama of the Gifted Child) reprises her classic critiques of filial duty. In her view, our culture systematically denies childhood abuse sufferers access to their true feelings. Repressed emotional responses to early humiliations and unfulfilled needs are inevitably transferred to the body, Miller believes, producing long-term illness. She also believes that the majority of therapists are bent on fostering an attitude of forgiveness. Miller instead urges the reader to reappraise the substance of the Fourth Commandment, which she construes as containing "a kind of moral blackmail" and, reflecting on her own unhappy childhood, argues that what survivors of parental cruelty need most is someone who shares their feelings of indignation. Miller traces the relationship between inadequate or tyrannical parenting and adult bodily illness, depression and suicide in pithy biographies of Dostoyevski, Chekhov, Kafka, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce and many others. Yet Miller is more a subjective observer and a guru than a social scientist. Her highly personal, undertheorized and generalizing approach will strike some as simplistic, yet those who loyally follow her child-centered philosophy will probably find much to enjoy in the conviction with which she writes. Having to go through a painful journey and books like this help, again. There is a reason why if it becomes necessary to go NO CONTACT one should stay in that mode. Whether it be with the abuser, or one of their "flying monkeys", they will only try to drag you back into their hurtful web of projection and using you as a decoy to not face their own life issues. I thought I had grown to a point this could no longer hurt me, but I swear narcs like to push every painful button they can, to feed on your emotional pain. Logically you may be able to get this, but it still hurts to be trashed, falsely labeled, wrongly accused, have anything and everything you say twisted and painful things (usually caused by them) that has ever happened to you repeatedly brought up. I did get very sick feeling, stomach problems, headaches, rashes, little sleep, etc. whist revisiting this drama. Thanks to books such as these, EFT, a ton of tears and resetting healthy boundaries , as well as listening/ viewing a bunch of YouTube videos the sun is peeking through again

Fabulous material. Very eye-opening and very loving. This is a must for those who have had physical and emotional trauma in your early years. Very healing and I have so much more respect for 'knowing my truth' because my body knows what isn't right. I highly recommend this book.

Profound and True

I first read Alice Miller's book explaining Hilter's brutality and murderous behavior a number of years ago. At the time, it seemed unbelievable that something as vast as the Holocaust could be caused by terrible childhood abuse. Then, since I practiced psychotherapy as a clinical psychologist and worked with many clients who had terrible abuse in childhood, the realness of Miller's analysis sunk in. These violent tendencies are stored in the body which to most IS largely unconscious and vague. When situatiions arise that duplicate emotionally what was experienced in childhood, rage can take over and overwhelm. It is a profound joke to think that the rational, everyday mind controls human behavior, and that myth must be dislodged before any real progress in eliminating war and other atrocities can occur. The first step is to believe what your body is telling you and learning its data languuage. No easy task, but possible if one wants to know oneself. Drawing with the non-dominant hand in a fee flow way is quite helpful, as Alice Miller illustrates in another of her books. I highly recommend this book for everyone who wants to really understand oneself, and the first step is learning what your body reveals.

About the Author

Professor Corrado Tringali obtained his BA in chemistry at the University of Catania, Italy, in 1973. From 1977 to 1985 he was an assistant professor, teaching courses in organic chemistry and physical methods in organic chemistry. In November 1985 he became an associate professor (organic chemistry), and since November 2001 he has been a full professor (teaching courses in organic chemistry, natural products chemistry, and physical methods in organic chemistry). At present, he is coordinator of the international Doctorate of Research in Chemical Science program at the University of Catania (Cycles XXII –XIV).
