A well meaning, misleading book.

It is hard to know where to even begin such a review.

I am a physician and yeshiva graduate. I continue to learn daily. I am also in a committed gay relationship with another man that began in 1985. I founded the third gay and lesbian synagogue in the US in 1976 in Chicago after the local shuls refused to allow people like me to even davven with them if we were open about who we were. At the time every single synagogue in Chicago refused to even allow us to rent space to pray. Finally, we ended up having to pray in a non-Jewish setting. When as an intern in South Bend, IN. I walked into the only orthodox shul to pray the rabbi told me that he was so happy to have a yeshiva grad there, not to mention a doctor. Then he asked me if I were married. I told him the truth. He then told me to leave and never return.

The author of this study is a sincere and literate man. He seems to truly care about the welfare of gay people but he also appears to me to be in major denial when it comes to us and our world.

It is only within the last 100 years that homosexuals have reached out to ally themselves with others like them in order to improve our lot in life. We are different and G-d created us as we are. There is absolutely nothing wrong with us per se as some might want to believe. The Torah does not condemn people for who they are. Rather it tells us that G-d wants a relationship with us, an intimate one, that brings out the best in us. And since He created us in His Image, there is nothing at all wrong with us including our same-sex attraction.

Our attractions are totally normal. In fact, if we, as homosexuals were attracted to the opposite sex then we would be abnormal for the way He created us. I know that many find this hard to related to but it is nonetheless so. Until heterosexuals realize this, they are really missing the point here.

The rabbis who are cited so well in this work never had any understanding of gays and lesbians as people. We were and in the mind of this author are solely defined by what we do in bed. Would heterosexuals like to be so defined in so narrow a way? I think not. Why not realize that in this way we are no different.

The verses in Genesis where the idea of sodomy or anal intercourse is first found and upon which much of this book revolves need to be reexamined closely. We are shown angels in the guise of men who are offered shelter. A crowd of men demands to have sex with them. Lot offers his daughters which they refuse. They want to rape the men. The crowd is not made up of same-sex attracted men; they are all straight men who want to rape other men. What is so hard to understand here? We are not dealing with gay men. And yet the rabbis, later on in Leviticus where men laying with men in the manner of women is prohibited, in their ignorance, assume that this must refer only to gay men since they allow it for heterosexuals.

Lesbians are nowhere mentioned in Torah. Yet the author draws the erroneous conclusion that the Torah also prohibits sex between them. In addition, he believes that sex between same sex couples of any kind is prohibited. The same rabbis who denounce men for having anal intercourse with other men in a consensual relationship, permit it for heterosexuals. Thus, they tip their hand to let us know that procreation is not an issue here.

All of this is not only faulty reasoning but downright ignorant.

The Torah not only does not condemn gay men and lesbians, since it was never referring to them in the first place in Leviticus ( it was referring to same sex rape), but doesn't condemn people for who they are per se.

The author tries to represent himself as reasonable and fair minded. He is neither in his conclusions which only serve to support the continuing hate and denigration of people like me in the orthodox community.

Long before Torah was given at Sinai Hashem created gay men and lesbians. We are a fact of life which no rabbinical decrees can eliminate. Homosexual sex and love/ attraction is found in every single species in the animal kingdom. We are a fact of life.

People, do not be sheep. Educate yourselves about the world. About life. Read, study the Torah. Know that it is Truth, but that many of those ignorant people who claim to let us know what it says are themselves unbearably ignorant. In their arrogance, they assume that they understand things which they have never studied and inquired into.

Would you want to base your life on such faulty and obviously ignorant advice?

Objective, authentic scholarship on a difficult topic. You don't see something this good very often.

Having met Rabbi Rapoport, and having heard him speak, I was convinced that his view was objective, scholarly, and very well-documented. It's so rare to see a work on a controversial topic on Jewish law not have a bias of some kind. Rabbi Rapoport tells it like it is, even when it's not the best news for gay people. BUT, he is clearly a compassionate soul, and he debunks a lot of the responsa based in homophobia and/or ignorance. I'm not all the way through it, as it's a scholarly read, and even the footnotes are very educational.

If you're interested in an objective, well thought out work on this difficult subject of Jewish law, buy this book!

The Power of God Through The Amazing John G. Lake

Read from the very hand of John G. Lake some of his incredible adventures with God. He gives great insight into his ministry. Of great interest is his 8 point commitment to the Lord. A key secret to the power of God operating through him was the deep level of personal integrity that Lake held himself to. Lake's accomplisments; like the establishment of 625 churches in Africa in just 4 years of ministry there. WOW This speaks to what the power of God will do from one ministry that flows in the miracle power of God. Lake is a man wonderfully unique, yet one who can be an example that challenges each of us. God can do the same things through you and me !

Faith lifting and compelling.

I found this small book to be very uplifting. John G. Lake was a gentle, loving servant of God. Who was used to perform unforgetable healings. Everywhere he ministered, God did miracles in the lives of those he prayed for. When Medical Science gave up on them, God intervined through the laying on of hands and they were healed. This book will build your faith. Don't miss reading it for yourself.

FAITH FOR FAITH

John Grahamme Lake remains one of my fondest Apostlic ministers of the early 19th century. Just the revelation of compassionate faith that he shared in his time is something today's christian leader and indeed lay-man, can glean from. As you read this account you'll notice that the title is an accurate description of this man's experiences with God. He strongly believed that compassion is essentially linked with faith, especially in the areas of healing and deliverance; an ingridient that today's Tommy Tenney calls a 'Highly developed sense of injustice about satanic oppression'. Adventures in God is a very compelling and small volume sure to leave the reader wanting more, so if you would like to know more, there are excellent other books on John Lake and his teachings.

About the Author
Edwin Williamson holds the King Alfonso XIII Chair of Spanish at the University of Oxford. He has since 2003 been a Professorial Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. He had previously held the Forbes Chair of Hispanic Studies at the University of Edinburgh. He has held academic posts at Trinity College, Dublin and Birkbeck College, University of London and has been a visiting professor at Stanford University and the University of Sao Paulo. Outstanding and readable.

An outstanding achievement. This history is valuable and unusual first for the extensive coverage of Latin America before the European arrival and secondly for the detail of the Spanish and Portuguese history that explains so much of the Columbus to Independence centuries. I was disappointed in the chapters on the twentieth century-they seemed to bog down in detail without structure. There is a shocking factual error in the chapter about the conflict in Central America in the 70s-80s-the author describes in detail the fictional assassination of Archbishop Romero on the steps of his cathedral, an event in films but not in life where he was shot saying mass in a hospital chapel. The kindle edition of this book has many errors of spelling, grammar, and incomplete sentences, not quite something on every page, but close.

Awesome! Now where is Book 3?! :)

Loved Book 1. Book 2 is even better! Very exciting, frustrating, exciting, annoying, exciting! I couldn't put this down and was devastated when I got to the end because I already knew Book 3 wasn't yet published. Hope it gets published soon because I'm dying to see how it all ends! Seriously though, great story. I'd love to see this made into a movie some day.

Alight drops you right back where we left off at the end of Pyxis. Corrine is back as the center of her pyramidal union. She tries to be strong, but struggles with the weight of her responsibilities as the others look to her for guidance. Her bestie, Angeline, has accepted her fate, and enjoys being a part of something important. Though Mason and Corrine grew close in Pyxis, they are still trying to figure out how they belong to each other outside of magic. Dorothy is back as Corrine's aunt and helpful tutor. There are a few new faces, like Zane, whom Corrine meets on the dream world. She is attracted to him, but between Aunt Dorothy's warnings and her feelings for Mason, she isn't sure what to do about it.

There was even more mystery in this one: between the other pyramidal union, the sick students and Harriet, the big bad from Book 1, who was back with a vengeance. I liked the mystery element more in this book than the previous one. It seemed more important somehow. There was more magic in this one, as well as a lot more action. Between the dream world, Harriet and the upcoming Summer Solstice, the pyramidal union was always running around, doing something or another.

Corrine was a strong female MC, which I loved. She had a ton of responsibility on her shoulders, but she didn't complain. She knew what she had to do and was willing to do it. Sure, she was sometimes sad or worried about her role, but she never tried to get out of it, or shirk those duties. Mason was back and just as cute as ever. He and Corrine were clearly perfect for each other, but couldn't see it. Zane was nice, but he struck me as a sort of red herring. He seemed too perfect. Was he a bad guy or a good one? It was really iffy there for a while, and I'm still not sure I'm convinced which one he is yet. Ang, Corrine's bestie, was another strong female. She also was struggling with her responsibilities, and with who her co-guardian was. But, like Corrine, she knew what had to be done.

The cover is okay, but it's not a favorite. I don't like the model's face, she almost seems to be cocky. She appears much more self-assured than Corrine actually is.

The sum up:
Lots of times you hear talk of a middle book in a trilogy being just a placeholder between the first and second books, but this is not one of those. It was solid and moved the plot along well.

What an amazing sequel Alight turned out to be!! Going into Alight I was a little worried it wouldn't live up to my expectations after having loved book one Pyxis so much, but now I can easily say Alight was AMAZING! I would even go as far as to saying I loved Alight more than Pyxis!

K.C. Neal has easily become one of my favorite authors, her writing in Pyxis was incredible, and I feel it only got better in Alight. All the sceneries of the fog, the cove, the bottles, the nets, the field everything was so magical and vivid in my mind while reading. Her writing has become one of my favorites to get lost into.

While Pyxis book one was a great read, I have to admit Alight really kicked everything WAY up! The mystery, the romance, the struggles, the friendships, everything in Alight felt like it had the amazing aspects I loved in Pyxis...but 10 times better!

Corinne has even more struggles in book two and even though she is scarred, she takes responsibility and knows she must take on the role as the Pyxis. I already had a lot of respect for Corinne in book one, but book two really brought out even more of who she is as a character. Now that I think about it, the Pyxis series has been amazing with character development for all of the main characters. Ang, Mason and Sophie, each of them I could see a big difference from how they were in book two from book one, and I cannot wait to see them grow even more in book three!

Although I loved practically everything in Alight, my only `complaint' would be at times things got predictable, there were several things that I believe were supposed to be surprises, but I had seen them coming. Now this didn't bother me too much cause it only happened on a few times, and while I had guessed some of the surprises, there were other surprises that completely threw me off guard and I DID NOT see coming!

My favorite part of Alight was easily the new addition of Zane. Some Australian mysterious yet caring guy? Ya how could he NOT be my favorite part! He is going to be a future fictional crush, I can tell already! I cannot wait to see more of him (hopefully a lot more!) in book three and get to know his character more, as of right now I have my fingers crossed for Corinne to end up with him at the end of this all!

Altogether if you are looking for a unique and amazing new series to start pick up Pyxis, it will not disappoint. Book two has been an amazing additional to a series that is easily becoming a favorite of mine, and I cannot wait to get my hands on book three the final book in the Pyxis series.
