Address the new atheists' arguments head on, and it's dead on

This book address the new atheists' arguments head on, and it's dead on. Copan's writing is clear, lucid, and readable. He has divided up chapters into a handful of pages (thought the font is rather small), so each "question" or "argument" is addressed quickly yet sufficiently.
The title of the book, "Is God a Moral Monster?" obviously is a rhetorical question. No, He isn't. But, why do new atheists frame God as such a being? In a nutshell, because they use out-of-context phrases, expressions, and impressions from the Bible. With Copan's further explanation on cultural backgrounds, context of events, and linguistic nuances, readers are able to grasp the deeper and more caring heart of God the Father.
I have not finished reading the book, bur the first 9 chapters or so have been satisfying. A good book for those who know the short answer to the question, but who need more detail and, thus, confidence/evidence.

If you are having trouble with all the death and destruction recorded in the Old Testament, read this book

Copan provides a very readable, concise look at many of the issues Christians, and non-Christians, have with all the death and destruction that seems to be ordered by God in the Old Testament. Copan takes a close look at the passages, at the culture of the times, at the history of the region, and brings a clear picture of what God was doing at that point in the history of the Hebrew people, the region, and the world. Everything has a purpose, and Copan provides a good over view of understanding God's purpose in the destruction in the ancient world and the documentation of such events in the Holy Bible.

Reading any ancient text, particularly one thought by so many to be divinely inspired, must have sound hermeneutics otherwise spurious conclusions (by New Atheist, Muslims, and some Christians) abound. Much of the biblical world is so very foreign to present day Western thinkers. The value systems are as far a part is east from the west, no pun intended. An old midrash of the Psalm that reads as removing one's sin as far as east is from the west comes to mind, the net is that this is not measured in distance, but in degrees of one turning their back on something. Many westerners don't relate to a shame/honor culture where the individual is never as important as the group, and the group tries to protect the individual. This book was helpful for me to turn towards the east again, albeit not sin related, and consider different ways of thinking and interpreting the Hebrew and New Testament scriptures. Thank you.
