There have been over 200 books written about James Dean over the years since his tragic car crash. It seems everyone has remembered, reminisced, examined, re-examined, defied and worshipped James Dean.

To one man, however, the modern interpretations of James Dean ring hollow. For him, James Dean is not a mythical figure, but a living memory. This one man has never shared his story - until now:

Lew Bracker, James Dean's closest friend.

Jimmy And Me: A Personal Memoir of James Dean is a very personal narrative of a friendship that began with young men talking of girls, old movies and cool cars. Its abrupt interruption will break your heart. Many of the events and conversations in this ebook have never been shared or published before. You will laugh and you will cry.

This book is not just a must-read for those having an interest in James Dean or for those curious about the real James Dean as told by the friend who knew him best. This is a compelling, brave and straightforward telling of a close friendship where the author paints a magnificent portrait of his friend, James Dean.

A Tale of Two Buddies
By Nick Nolan
In "Jimmy and Me" author Lew Bracker reveals - at long last - the details of his 16 month-long friendship with actor James Dean spanning the days after the release of `East of Eden' to Jimmy's untimely death. In Bracker's account we learn how the two young men met, what interests they shared, and how each became the brother the other wanted but never had. Bracker's prose is straightforward and quickly-paced, with enough background information on the author to know he's a credible guy with very little to gain--except for his own peace of mind--by publishing his long-awaited account.

However, anyone looking for never-before-disclosed gossip or prurient details of Mr. Dean's sexual orientation should not look to these pages; Bracker makes it clear that he saw no evidence of what so many other people report--including accounts that Jimmy was the ultimate prima-donna/ill-mannered lout.

Instead, what the reader gains is a bare-faced demystification of the man whose name was James Dean, and Bracker convincingly portrays him as a regular guy who loved acting and fast cars and pretty girls - probably in that order. Bracker also reveals that he is only now coming to terms with the storehouse of grief that has been bulging for decades; and during these revelatory pages he also passes to the reader the wisdom only an intelligent, observant octogenarian is qualified to impart.

What I loved about this book is how Bracker's grief is not that of the usual former lover or social-climbing sycophant (or crazed fan) of a Hollywood legend, but is instead that of family man who's mourned the loss of his `little brother' for more than a half-century. Bracker closes the book with an apropos quote by Edna St. Vincent Millay, but what occurred to me were JG Whittier's famous words: "Of all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these, `It might have been'."

Lew, for both your sakes I hope in the next go-round you and Jimmy meet up again to take up where you left off...tires squealing and exhaust pipes braying, the setting sun reddening your grinning faces. I'm sure he's looking forward to that moment as much as you are.

If you value friendship, you will value this book.
By Laura
I definitely enjoyed this book for the reasons that the other 5 star reviews named, but what this book personally meant to me is very hard to put into words. I cannot thank Lew enough for allowing me to experience this sincere friendship. I felt that I was sitting in the booth right next to them at Villa Capri, sharing in the laughs, the stress, the comfortable silences, and taking part in their friendship.

One of my favorite things about this book is that Lew writes that this is the Jimmy he knew, and this is the Jimmy that he was going to write about. I feel that this has such truth in it with all of the friendships that we encounter. You love your friends and you see them for how you see them, not for what others say about them. I found myself mourning with Lew and feeling his emptiness of losing an incredible friendship with so much hope, in a day. The night that I got to that part of his book, which happened to be the night that I regularly meet a good friend at a restaurant, I looked at our friendship in a newly appreciated way.

If you want to read a book about James Dean; I highly recommend this. If you want to read a book about friendship; then I HIGHLY recommend this. From reading this book, I felt that I gained two more friends, felt the loss of one and appreciated the friendships that I have. Before reading this book, he was James Dean to me, but now I feel like I can call him Jimmy.

Thanks again Lew for sharing something that was so personal to you as it ended up being personal for me as well. Not only did I get an insight into Jimmy, I got to experience a friendship that I can relate closely to my life and had an effect on me for the better.
